Green Mountain Coffee K-Cup Prices Soar The Fall Of 2011.

Might this be the beginning of the end of the popularity of the Keurig?

type=textChanges in the coffee market have reduced coffee supplies and are driving some coffee-bearing regions to stockpile coffee beans. This is big news if you are a coffee drinker.

Prices are expected to increase around the world. It is a lesson of basic economics - the law of supply and demand - and there is nothing that can be done about it this year. Unfortunately, everyone from coffee farmers through roasters and retailers, right down to you and your coffee mug, is feeling the effects a poor growing season can have on an agricultural product that is consumed internationally but only grown in a few select regions.

Weather is as unreliable as a commodities market, and these days, it seems just as unstable. A bad season in South America led to weaker than usual harvests and a resultant decline in this year?s world harvest of Arabica coffee beans. Like a run on the banks, this has led to panicked stockpiling in other regions of the world. Beyond that, investors in coffee commodities too took a lemming-like run on robusta coffee beans, driving up prices of the lesser quality coffee bean as well. This combination of natural and man-made factors in the coffee market this year has formed the perfect storm to drive up all coffee prices.

The result is that coffee prices have reached an historic high. All of this has happened at a time when domestic stockpiles of coffee beans are low. Not a single domestic manufacturer of whole bean, ground or single serving coffee is escaping the increase in costs that this leads to. The result is as much as a twenty percent increase in coffee prices. Of course, this cost increase is passed on to the retailers and unfortunately also affects the pocket books of coffee drinkers.

We were expecting even the best K-Cup coffee prices to increase 10 - 15 percent and other coffee products to see similar price jumps in the first weeks of October.

Coffee is a market-based commodity; as demand stays steady and the supply declines, worldwide prices increase. We can all hope for a better harvest next year on all the coffee farms the world over.

Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups

The patent is running out; is it time for a new leader in the single serve brewing race?

Green-Mountain-Coffee-K-CupsThe Keurig brand is lucrative for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, not because of profits from the Keurig coffee makers but from the exorbitant price that they charge for the Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups.

Now, while there are several different roasters able to produce K-Cups, Green Mountain has successfully acquired all but Gloria Jean's, if I am not mistaken. So, while you buy K-Cups under a different name, it is still the GMCR that make the profit. When you consider that Green Mountain Coffee charges the equivalent of $35 a pound for coffee in K-cups, according to Greg Fraser of the GRT Absolute Return fund, it would seem that there is a tremendous amount of profit realized in those K-Cups. With a near monopoly in the market, there is no incentive to offer the lowest price for K-Cups.

But Green Mountain faces the loss of patent protection for the K-Cups in 2012, which could drastically affect revenues and profits in the future. Given their expenditures to acquire the rights for K-Cup production, might Green Mountain find themselves overextended financially?

Since the price of K-Cups has increased substantially in the last 8 months, fewer K-Cups are being purchased already, which may open the door for some of the other competition in the single serve brewer market.

With regards to the waste created by all of the plastic K-Cups, it would not surprise me if the single serve market is percolating a change of the leading brewer. Paper filter pods are a much more environmentally friendly way to brew coffee.

Stay tuned... I smell the coffee brewing now.

Green Mountain Coffee and Starbucks K-Cups Partnership

Starbucks K-Cups And Keurig Brewers

Starbucks Coffee Gift Cards And Starbucks Coffee GiftsGreen Mountain Coffee Roasters is known for quality, innovative roasted coffee varieties and sustainable business practices but more importantly, they own Keurig Inc . Keurig has the vast majority of the single cup brewing system market.

Starbucks Corporation runs the largest and most well known coffee shop chain in North America. Now, these two coffee giants are partnering to produce K-Cups for Starbucks and Tazo tea branded products. This will effectively facilitate Starbucks entering the incresingly popular market for the new Keurig Single-Cup Brewing System.

Keurig's Single-Cup Brewing System uses K-Cups to brew excellent coffee at the moment you want it.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters will be producing a super-premium line of coffee and tea K-Cups under the Starbucks brand. This will allow home users with a Keurig Single-Cup machine to create their own Starbucks favorites in convenient single servings. Starbucks also plans to sell the Keurig machines, the Starbucks K-Cups and other supplies for the system in a majority of Starbucks locations.

Surveying has shown that 80 percent of Starbucks customers do not use a single cup brewing machine. However, many fans of the Starbucks coffee quality may purchase one when they find out they can create their favorite coffee drinks at home. Those who already own a Keurig coffee maker may look forward to this fall with the introduction of Starbucks K-Cups.

Starbucks K-Cups For Green Mountain Coffee's Keurig Machine?

Will we ever see Starbucks K-Cups or is Tassimo brewbot the only way to get Starbucks single cup coffee.

Starbucks Corp., the world's largest coffee chain, just might miss out on a surge in home-brewing unless it can break a 13-year-old deal with Kraft Foods Inc.'s. The less than vibrant sales of the Tassimo coffee maker and more recent marketing of the Tassimo Brewbot, could cost Starbucks millions. If Starbucks can't break away from Tassimo, then they will miss the Single Serve Coffee explosion.

VIA apparently is not selling that well. For the 12 months ending in October, Via generated $16.8 million worth of sales in U.S. groceries, according to SymphonyIRI. During the same period, Green Mountain K-Cups alone did $72 million in U.S. grocery sales.

Here's some other highlights:

Under the terms of their deal with Kraft, Starbucks can't put its coffee in the Keurig Home Brewer, according to a complaint from Kraft filed in federal court in White Plains, New York.

That's unfortunate for Starbucks because Kraft's brewing system has 2.6 percent of the grocery market while Keurig, dominates the U.S. market for machines that make single cups of coffee in a minute or less. Keurig is owned by Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc., and basks in 71 percent of the market.

"We are looking forward to providing Starbucks customers with more ways to enjoy Starbucks coffee, one cup at a time," Hilowitz said via an e-mailed statement on Dec. 29.

So one hast to ask, is Starbucks going to go to Green Mountain Coffee and Keurig after they break their deal with Kraft? One can't predict, but we'd really enjoy having some Starbucks K-Cups.

Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups With Starbucks Coffee

What do you think of the partnership of Green Mountain Coffee and Starbucks?

Green Mountain Coffee has a reputation for excellent coffee and sustainability (in spite of the disposable plastic K-Cups) Starbucks has a huge following for their coffee drinks and less so for their brewed coffee. Do you think that their partnership will create more sales for both companies?

Green Mountain Coffee Partnering For Starbucks K-Cups?

CNBC commentator questions whether we will see Starbucks K-Cups soon.

Starbucks_Coffee_Gift_Card_Buy_Starbucks_Coffee Is Green Mountain About to Partner With Starbucks?

By: Herb Greenberg
CNBC Senior Stocks Commentator

As Starbucks gets closer to announcing a single-serve coffee, investors are trying to figure out which company Starbucks will partner with.

Lots of opinions, and on Monday afternoon the story got a new twist when Reuters reported that a source close to the talks said the two companies have been in "ongoing partnership negotiations."

Never mind that "ongoing negotiations" can mean merely that they've been talking, as would be expected, given Green Mountain's [GMCR 41.81 1.10 (+2.7%) ] single-serve dominance with its so-called K-Cup coffee pods. The news, toward the end of the trading day, juiced Green Mountain's stock-causing it to jump more than 6 percent to a new all-time high after being down much of the day.

The slide appeared to be based on uncertainty about whether Starbucks [SBUX 34.0025 0.5025 (+1.5%) ] will partnership with Green Mountain or somebody else. The speculation was sparked by a weekend story in the Chicago Tribune that said Starbucks was close to announcing its plans for a single-serve, Green Mountain-like product.

Starbucks declined comment, but a spokeswoman added that "you'll see an announcement in the near future and more, over time, after that." Green Mountain declined comment.

In a note to his clients today, before the Reuter's story, Scott Van Winkle of Canaccord Genuity said he believed that a deal between Green Mountain and Starbucks "is inevitable." He said he believes it could be tied to the new Keurig technology Green Mountain discussed on its most recent earnings call. Existing Keurig K-Cup patents start expiring next year.

By contrast, Howard Penney of Hedgeye told his clients that Starbucks "buying Green Mountain, or aligning themselves to the Keurig brewer, is not going to happen."

The real story-or what I like to call the story's interesting twist?

In response to my question earlier in the day about who Starbucks would partner with, spokeswoman Lara Wyss said, "I think the question is would we partner with anyone?"

She added that the company is looking at all options, including "our own R&D, a partnership with another company and/or through expansion of our VIA brand to other products and forms." As I noted in October, Treehouse Foods [THS 51.82 0.23 (+0.45%) ] has rolled out a private-label cartridge that works in the Keurig Brewer. That sparked a patent-infringement lawsuit from Green Mountain.

Will Starbucks do the same?

It's unclear, but here is more from Starbucks on the topic:

The single-serve coffee category is in a nascent stage of development and by no means mature yet. At this early period, there is no way to determine who the winner is yet related to format or machines.

An analogy is that Starbucks is to the single-serve coffee category as what Apple spacer is to cell phones.

The industry should not rush to judgment related to the single serve-coffee category as it is in its earliest development-and there's no clear winner yet.

Starbucks believes it's is in a unique position with thousands of retail stores and millions of customers daily. The company added that those numbers put it in the "best position for distribution and sales of machines and/or single serve coffee, no matter what the format." The company noted that the success of its instant coffee VIA points to its influence in the marketplace. VIA has racked up $180 million in total sales to date and has 50,000 points of distribution, including in the US, Canada, England, Ireland, Japan and the Philippines.

Starbucks has been looking at the single-serve category for some time and has many options including R&D, partnerships with another company, or through our VIA brand. We don't have any specific announcements at this time, however, but should have information in the near future.

At this point in time, 80 percent of Starbucks customers do not have a single-serve machine.

Green Mountain Coffee 'Retiring' K-Cup Coffees

Some of our favorite Green Mountain Coffee K-Cups are being discontinued.

type=textGreen Mountain Coffee will be retiring several of our favorite K-Cups at the end of December.

I am particularly distressed that Tully's K-Cups seem to be disappearing. Tully's Evergreen, Full City Roast, Madison Blend and Sumatra K-Cups are all going away.

They say I can replace the Madison Blend with their Nantucket Blend... there is NO COMPARISON!
I would suggest that you check their list of retiring K-Cups to see if your favorites are being discontinued.

Is it possible that we are seeing the ramifications of Green Mountain buying out their competition for K-Cups. I guess we wait and see.

Green Mountain K-Cups Reviews

K-Cups Coffee Review; Colombian Coffee K-Cups

Some of the highest quality Colombian coffee is grown in the southwestern part of the country, near the Pacific Ocean, in the Popayan region of Colombia.

The mountains in this area are known as the Cordillera Oriental, a part of the Sierra Nevada range. Moving in their grandeur, these mountains also produce coffee famous for its deep berry notes.

This quality is due in part to the high altitudes as well as the way the coffee is processed. Nearly all Colombian coffee is processed using the wet method, which enhances the coffee's acidity and thus its flavor.

It's all in the name: Popayán is the region within Colombia and Supremo is the size of the bean.

This coffee has tremendous expressions of ripe fruit. This helps distinguish it from coffees of other regions. It all has to do with the Popayán soil, the tableland and how the coffee is processed... particularly within the regions' rainy, cool climate.

Because the micro-climate is cool, fermentation - an important step in processing coffee-is prolonged. A longer period of time with the pulp of the coffee cherry still on the coffee bean leads to some pronounced fruity characteristics.

"Wow, a burst of ripe fruit notes and sweet walnut tones. Our flavor is unique to the Popayán region which we celebrate in this bold and complex single-origin coffee."
-Lindsey Bolger

Green Mountain Coffee Buys Timothy's World K-Cups

K-Cups Competitive Pricing Becomes Interesting Concept.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters just acquired Timothy's World Coffee. Add them to the list of K-Cup Coffees already controlled by Green Mountain Coffee and it begins to be concerning.

Tully's K-Cups, Caribou K-Cups and Newman's Own K-Cups plus now, Timothy's K-Cups who is also responsible for the Emeril's and Kahlua® Original K-Cup brands. There aren't that many roasters making K-Cups for our Keurig coffee makers, so who is left to keep K-Cup coffee prices competitive?

Van Houtte K-Cups are difficult to find even online in the U.S., Gloria Jean's has fabulous K-Cup coffees as does Diedrich who also is responsible for the Coffee People K-Cups.

Van Houtte is a Canadian coffee company that also does substantial business in office coffee supplies. Gloria Jean's Coffee is Australian owned and is attempting to move into the Canadian market as well. This may help explain why Green Mountain Coffee wanted to get a foothold in the Canadian market as well.

So, unless I am mistaken, the only competition left in the United States for Green Mountain Coffee is Diedrich Coffee.

It appears as though Green Mountain Coffee is looking for a monopoly on K-Cups which would allow them to set the price for the convenience of K-Cups coffee.

I will be buying Diedrich and Gloria Jean's K-Cups to make sure that fair price competition continues.

Green Mountain K-Cups Coffee Review: Lake & Lodge Coffee

Smooth, West Coast style dark roasted coffee beans

The smooth, West Coast style dark roasted blend of premium coffee from Green Mountain K-Cups Lake and Lodge will impress you with its extraordinary rich aroma, berry-hued bright ,and rich, smokey sweetness.

September 2006 Rating: 85 Points (out of 100)
"Smoke, toast caramel, prune-toned fruit in the aroma. In the cup rich, low-key, with continued toast and pruny fruit notes and a hint of flowers."
- Ken Davids, CoffeeReview.com

The flavors of this rich, darker roast blend reflect hearty west-coast style roasts. Dark roasted Indonesian coffees offer bountiful sweetness and syrupy notes. A touch of East African beans adds an element of berry-hued brightness to the blend's bold flavor foundations.

This particular blend is very versatile, yet elegant. Its makes a great espresso, partners well with cream and is delicious iced.

"Rugged refinement. Deliciously dark. Great for sipping while sitting next to the camp fire."
- Lindsey Bolger of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters
