This lens introduces some green and alternative building techniques and materials.

Green building is the process of using environmentally friendly products and proceedures in order to make an energy efficient living space for you and your family. Green building materials can be renewable resources gathered in a sustainable way (i.e. living products), recycled materials, or a limited number of new materials that were treated and gathered in an ecologically sound fashion and are able to be recycled when their lifecycle is complete.

Successes and Difficulties of Alternative Building

Please provide examples of personal experiences dealing with alternative and green building.

Cob building.

Cob is a natural building material made from clay, sand, straw and water. Cob is an inexpensive alternative to wood or cement. The standard cob mix is made from 75-85% sand, and 15-25% clay, finely grated straw, and water. To make, mix the ingredients together well, using your feet. Then put the mixture in a tarp and roll it like dough. The mixture should be stiff like dry brownie dough. Once the cob is made apply in layers to desired hight and thickness.
