Polysterene foam is made from ethlyene, benzene, styrene and a blowing agent. Benzene is known carcinogen while styrene is a "possible carcinogen" for humans.
Styrene from the containers can migrate to humans by dissolving into the food and drinks stored in our bodies with possible long-term consequences to reproductive systems for men and women, brain damage, dizziness, learning impairments and shortened lifespans. Workers and residents around factories may also be exposed directly to high levels of toxins.
Single use polystrene foam containers are environmentally destructive because it cannot be easily recycle and is not biodegradable, remaining in our environment for more than 500 years.
Long term use of polystrene foam increase the risk of getting cancer. "Styrene is a possible human carcinogen"-WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer.
