Water, the basis for a dog's life!

Water, it's the most important nutrient for a dog's healthy life. And we need lots of it. Did you know that an animal can loose all of its fat and half of its protein and survive, but only a 10% loss of body water causes serious illness. (Source: PetEducation.com)

But not all water is created equal. There's tap water, filtered water, bottled water, water from streams, rivers and ponds, wells and standing water in puddles on our walks. Oh, and not to forget, toilet water!

Since water is so important to our quality of life, the quality of our water needs to be of great concern. With reports of fluoride and chlorine in tap water, Giardia in standing puddles, salts, and lawn and farming chemicals in rivers and ponds, how do you know if your water is safe?

All natural and organic foods and treats!

They are not only good, they are good for your pup!

How can you help your pet be more 'holistic' and green? Here are just a few things you can do, starting right now:
  • Feed your pets a more natural food diet containing the freshest ingredients you can afford and manage. Avoid foods with artificial flavors, colorings and other unnatural ingredients.
  • Cut back on unnecessary vaccinations by doing your homework and talking to your vet about titers. Titers are tests to see if you have the necessary amount of medicine or antibodies found in your blood. You may not need all those vaccines and titers will help you know.
  • Cut back on drugs. Seek out alternative and holistic methods, like supplements and vitamins for treating certain diseases, and chiro and accupuncture for pain.
These are just a few ideas. And of course you should always consult with your vet when making any major decisions about your pet's health. There are healthy alternatives to conventional medicine, read more:

Dr. Shawn - the natural vet has a veterinary practice, and he is author of many articles about holistic methods, as well as a featured host of the Natural Vet on Martha Stewart's Sirius Channel.

American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association - an organization whose purpose is to function as a forum for the exploration of alternative and complementary areas of health care in veterinary medicine. Here you can search for a holistic vet near you, as well as garner wonderful information about the topic.

Mum, Gracie and I were in Dog Fancy Magazine's August 2008 issue!

In the Summer of 2008, Mum and I were interviewed by a writer from Dog Fancy Magazine for a special premier issue of Dog Fancy's Natural Dog.

The article, in the August 2008 issue, is by Tom Barthel, a master gardener and freelance writer that specializes in pet and gardening topics. The article is entitled, "10 Steps to a Greener Home." Check it out!

Spay or neuter: It's good for everyone!

Spaying or neutering your pet is not only healthy for your pet, but it's good for you and your community; leaving less of an ecological paw print and saving lives.

Each year on the last Tuesday in February is Spay Day. Sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States, this day folks all of the US learn about spaying or neutering and how it's the most effective way to reduce the vast numbers of animals who are born only to die prematurely and without a family who loves them.

Why you should spay or neuter your pet.
Learn more about Spay Day.

Here's a yummy idea!

A new way to compost the 'doogie doo' and use it to fertilize your lawn and garden is through vermicomposting!

The Tumbleweed Pet Poo Converter is two sturdy nesting boxes with a lid, which form a neat, compact portable unit. The worms eat and breed in the top box, which has a perforated base to allow any liquid waste to drain through to the bottom (collector) box. The "worm poo" or worm castings remain in the top box and can be harvested.

The bottom or catcher box collects the valuable liquid waste which can be diluted and used as a fertilizer on your garden.

Hi Cristen, good question! I applaud your aim to reduce. The important thing when deciding what to put on the bodies of our pups is the ingredients. Soaps free of harmful SLS, unnatural preservatives and other chemicals are what we recommend. So get to know your ingredients.

Some human grade 'soaps' may be too drying and harsh for pups. We utilize a good quality, organic, eco-friendly shampoo made especially for dogs. And JoJo doesn't get a bath very often. Maybe only every few months at the most. He does get very good brushings every few days, but only wipe downs if he gets super dirty. That way his skin stays nice and hydrated, and retains all the natural oils. I hope that helps!
