Green Eggs and Ham; Will you try them here or there?

Green Eggs and Ham is one of Dr Suess's most enjoyable and amusing books, with a clear message to unadventurous children and adults alike. With wonderfully strange situations in which to try Green Eggs and Ham, superb rhyming text and the surreal illustrations that are a trademark of Dr Suess, this is a brilliant book that remains one of my favourites over 30 years after first having it read to me by my parents.

Sam-I-am

Sam-I-am is the persistent profferer of the plate of Green Eggs and Ham, constantly endeavouring to tempt the nameless sceptic into trying this unusual treat. Sam-I-am has often been compared to a telemarketer and the lengths to which he stretches do indeed lend some strength to this allegory. By constantly changing his marketing strategy from the original "try them here or there" to increasingly bizarre situations, including "try them, try them in a tree, try them, try them and you will see", Sam-I-am eventually wears down his "victim" who does indeed try Green Eggs and Ham in the final pages.

The Nameless Sceptic

At the beginning of this book, the nameless sceptic is quietly minding his own business until interrupted by Sam-I-am. For the remainder of the book he is transported from boxes, to houses, to cars, to trains in an attempt to find a situation in which he is prepared to try Green Eggs and Ham. This character doggedly refuses to try them saying, "I do not like Green Eggs and Ham, I do not like them Sam-I-am". However, such is the persistence of Sam-I-am that the sceptic eventually agrees to try them if Sam will leave him in peace.

The Illustrations

Whilst the rhyming text makes a great story and creates quite bizarre situations, the illustrations add enormously to this book. With Dr Suess's odd cat-like figures painted in an array of eye-catching and surreal colours, the artwork in Green Eggs and Ham makes purchasing this book worthwhile even without the memorable story that goes with them.

Green Eggs and Ham is truly one of the best children's books available, in my opinion, and I was delighted to find that there is a whole load of Green Eggs and Ham stuff for sale on Amazon.
