Switch On The Green

Being environmentally friendly is not hard. In fact, the hardest part about starting an environmentally friendly plan is making the decision to do it. But once you commit yourself everything starts to come together in an easy, simple to do, way. It's like flicking a switch and turning on the green.

Start by getting your family involved. If you have kids in school they are probably learning about recycling and environmental issues already. Ask them and see what their thoughts are. Then get a commitment from them to help.

The easiest way to begin is to start recycling. Designate a space and containers for the collection of your recycleable products. When your bins fill up take them to a recycling collection center.

Recycle Bins

.
  • Paper Bag : Use a paper shopping bag to collect your paper recycling into. That way the bag can be recycled with the papers. When you are shopping save any paper bags that you get for this purpose.
  • Cardboard Boxes : Use empty cereal or pop boxes to store your flattened cardboard in. Simply open the empty boxes you want to recycle and fold them flat, then stuff them into the storage box. When the storage box is full start another one.
  • Plastic Shopping Bag : Use a plastic shopping bag to store your plastic bag recycling. This includes plastic shopping bags, plastic film (ie: saran wrap), plastic wrap included in packaging, etc. This is for any thin, bag-like plastic.
  • Sturdy Box : Use a sturdy cardboard box (or large, strong bag) to hold your clean, hard plastics (containers, packaging, etc.)

Use another box to hold your clean glass items.

Use another box to hold your clean cans.

Keep The Green Coming

Recycling is just the start of your new environmentally friendly lifestyle plan. With the family all participating I'm sure you will soon be coming up with many other ways to add to your 'green' plan.

Some are easier than others so start with the easy stuff and work your way up to the bigger things.

Whatever you do, you will feel good about it - and more importantly - you are making a difference. By keeping garbage out of our landfills and making it available for reuse we are having a positive effect on our environment.
