But, what about the Pandas?
Do not worry.
The bamboo used to make our furniture products is Moso bamboo which is not the preferred choice of pandas; therefore, the use of this extraordinary product poses no danger to their food supply or habitat. Just one more endorsement on an already long list of this exceptional "green" product.
How they turn a plant into furniture
The Moso bamboo canes (or culms) can grow to a diameter of 7 inches and reach heights of 80 feet or more. Its strength, flexibility and availability, is a prime factor in making it a valuable structural material for the past centuries (it is still being used as scaffolding for multi-floor buildings throughout Asia).

The transformation from raw bamboo into building stock begins with cutting the sorted cane into lengths, then splitting them into slats and then rough planing them. They then boil all the slats in a boric acid treatment solution for pest damage prevention. If they are producing caramelized bamboo, the slats are put into steam vessels to be carbonized (a process which cooks the sugars in the bamboo) turning the "natural" light colored bamboo into a rich warm honey color. From there the slats head for the kiln where they are dried to approximately 6-9% moisture content.

The slats are then cooled and go through a final balance before becoming a solid bamboo panel. Bamboo slats for the exotic collection are cut into thinner slices, layered and then compressed under enormous pressure and more heat, which creates a much heavier and denser panel (100 times denser than Red Oak). It is from these finished panels that the "exotic bamboo" collections are made. Greenington's unique "Tiger Wood" bamboo, as seen in the Magnolia collection, is a combination of the "natural exotic" (does not go through the steaming process) and "caramelized exotic", layered and press-formed under high pressure into panels which are included in the Magnolia shelf, nesting tables and bedroom pieces.

Yes, bamboo is a truly amazing plant and building resource.
