Tips for Green Living
-
Unplug electronics when you are not using them
Many products like televisions, stereo equipment, and computers use electricity when they are off. Unplug them to save electricity, and lower your bill. -
Turn off the water when brushing your teeth, shaving, or hand washing dishes
You can save several gallons of water each day (and lower your water bill), by simply turning the water off, instead of letting it run while doing other things. -
Bring your own bags to the grocery store
Most plastic grocery bags are made from petroleum products and not good for the environment. Most paper bags are not made from recycled paper. Save the trees and our planet by bringing your own bags to the store. Also, some stores offer discounts if you don't use their bags. -
Replace your furnace filter
This is important, even in the summer. Your furnace and air conditioner will run more efficiently with a clean filter, and save you money in the long run. -
Insulate your hot water heater
This is a big one. Buy a simple water heater jacket and it will save money and energy by keeping the water in your tank warm. -
Use Eco-Friendly Cat Litter
Cat litter choices such as shredded newspaper, swheat scoop, feline pine, equine pine, and Yesterday's News are better for the environment than clay or clumping litters. However, it's important to NEVER FLUSH cat feces down the toilet, as parasites found in cat feces can kill otters. Cat feces can be scooped and placed in biodegradable bags and placed in the trash. It should never be added to your compost pile.

More Tips For Green Living
-
Buy 100% Recycled Products
Buying 100% recycled products like computer paper, envelopes, stationery, and trash bags reduces our reliance on landfills, and saves trees. -
Recycle at Home
So much of our household waste can be recycled. Papers, magazines, bottles, cans, and other products can often be recycled at the curbside, or taken to recycling bins at schools and churches to raise money. Old computer monitors and electronics can often be recycled for cash, too. -
Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs
As your bulbs burn out at home, replace them with energy efficient fluorescent bulbs. They last longer and use much less energy. This is an easy way to save money on your electric bill! -
Try to find LED bulbs
As your bulbs burn out at home, try to fun LED bulbs to replace them with. They are even better than CFLs as they do not contain mercury, they last a long time and they use far less energy than incandescent bulbs. Save money on your electric bill, too -
Use a Manual Push Mower
Gas mowers put tons of pollutants in the air. You can save gasoline and reduce your emissions by using a manual mower. It's a great way to get a weekly workout, while beautifying your yard. -
Clean Up After Your Dog
It's important to clean up after your dog. Dog waste can transmit disease and contribute to water pollution. However, please don't use plastic grocery bags. A greener solution is to flush it down the toilet, or use a biodegradable pet waste bag. -
Rethink Paper Napkins
We tend to use paper towels and napkins without thinking, but this is an easy change to make. Each time you reach for a paper napkin, ask yourself if you could use a cloth napkin or kitchen towel instead. -
Clean with Vinegar and Water
You can clean most household surfaces with a simple solution of vinegar and water. You can add a few drops of dish soap to eliminate streaks, and customize the fragrance with your favorite essential oil.
