he Green Movement: I'ts More Than Trendy Now
Much has been documented on the harmful ways that conventional cotton is harvested and grown. I will not spend much time, or none at all on the subject. However, what I will mention here is the demand in which organic cotton is acquiring and how much of these green practices are going mainstream from small businesses to the giant retailers and now hotel chains.
Many can argue , such as the fervid environmentalists , that this trend is greatly based on consumerism, and to a point that is an arguably correct statement. However, given that we do live in an extremely acquisitive society, where everything centers on the acquisition of goods and services, this trend may not in the long run may have beneficial consequences.
For example, retail giants like the Gap and now even the Walmart chains are getting in on the action of going green. The gap for its part has joined forces with a the organization Te Better Cotton Initiative , and it is now supplying organic cotton apparel and eco-friendly clothes in most of its outlets. Walmart is also on the bandwagon by also implementing an organic clothing line in its stores. I do believe that in this example it has really gone mainstream, given that most of organic products happen to be very pricey, this would give way to have them at more affordable prices.
It can be argued that "going green" is still deep-rooted in consumerism and economics and not so much on idealism and social justice. Although there is a big emphasis on the fair trade through the participation of these large retailers, it is basically and simply very good business sense. Surely with this recent buzz of going green and the growing demand for organic(be it cotton or other wise) these programs could not at some point be promoted and set forth. However, if you were always an avid environmentalist this new trend of going green is just that a trend that will quickly fade as most do.
Yet, when I first started writing on the subject of the green movement, I also had my doubts, on the faddish of green, but it seems that as more attention is set on environmental protection the less fashionable is going to be and the more urgency people will put into the matter.
