There's no longer an excuse!

Still using plastic baggies? Still buying and throwing away? With all the reusable snack and sandwich products out there, there's no longer an excuse for needless waste.

Although the initial monetary output may be off-putting, the overall savings (to both the planet and your pocketbook) will leave you smiling.

And who can afford to throw away money in today's economy?

Thank you!

thankyou-smBefore I get down to the nitty-gritty, I want to take a moment to give a big, fat THANK YOU to everyone who has offered suggestions for websites and other ideas on places to look for reusables! You guys are great and I'm very appreciative!

The first part ...

In Go green with reusable lunchboxes, I offered bento box style alternatives to packing your lunch. Most of these come with their own compartments that fit the individual boxes.

And now on to the next step ...

But what about those times when you just need a quick snack and aren't packing an entire lunch? Or when you need to *gasp* brown bag it and don't want to use disposable baggies?

The answer is simple - reusable snack and sandwich bags.

There's so much out there and at such a reasonable price (and some can even be made by you!) that recycling (reusing/what ever you want to call it) should be second nature to us now.

Featured Site of the Moment!

Reusies.com gets my vote for Site of the Moment (which is new and thus far untested). To start with, they have this great poem that caught my attention on the spot. Secondly, they have a fair amount of different patterns to choose from. Third, they offer coordinating snack and sandwich bags. I don't know why that thought makes me smile, but it does.

Credit for the picture goes to Reusies.com. Credit for the poem goes to them as well. Credit for pointing me in their direction goes to Lynn. Thank you!

Where do you start?

  • The Reusable Fresh Snack Pack is washable and see-through. As a plus, the flap can fold out to become a handy place mat.
  • 3 Green Moms offer the lunch skins which can hold both sandwiches and snacks in one convenient size.
  • Snack Taxi is another sandwich style bag that comes in a variety of colors.
  • Wrap-N-Mat unfolds completely for easy cleaning and to act as a place mat while eating.
  • Happy Sacks offers a variety of different reusable and biodegradable bags, as well as boxes, utensils and bottles.
  • ReSnackit offers a rather wide variety of patterns in two different sizes.
  • I was very impressed by Greengoosebags. I love the wide variety of prints that are offered and the price seemed very reasonable for a quality handmade product. I also liked the simple and straightforward way the bags were offered. This is what they are and this is why they should be used. I liked it a lot.
  • Another great Etsy shop has been brought to my attention ... Greentime Creations! They offer both handmade snack and sandwich bags in a variety of prints. As a plus, they also take custom orders if you're looking for a different print than what they currently offer.

There are always options!

Reusables on Amazon

I have to admit that I'm very disappointed in the selection of reusable bags that Amazon carries. I've tried every variation of search words I can think of and I've come up with these.

There are other options through external sites for purchase through Amazon, but ... I'm disappointed. I thought there'd be more. *sigh*

For those that are a little more crafty ...

  • If all these look good but you're not sold on the idea of buying them ... try making them yourself. Betz White is a craft-o-holic that came up with a tutorial on How to Make a Reusable Sandwich Wrap. This is something that I'm planning on trying!
  • eHow also offers a simple tutorial on how to make a reusable sandwich wrap. There's no template or pictures, but if you can follow stereo instructions ... wait ... can anyone actually follow stereo instructions?
  • Julie at Towards Sustainability also has a simple tutorial for a fair sized sandwich wrap. Between this one and the above, this one seems a little easier to follow. That might just be me, though.

Make 'em yourself from Amazon

Amazingly, my exhaustive searching on Amazon didn't turn up a huge amount of books on how to make reusable bags. I found this book, which offers patterns for how to make lunch totes and shopping bags, but nothing else. Interesting.

Did I miss something? Am I using the wrong search words?

Back to searching ...

I've found books on how to properly swag your drapery. That was something I was dying to learn about. /sarcasm

My wife has been using reusable sandwich bags for more than a year now and it works better than the plastic bags. We have been recommending reusable bags to our family and friends and they too are satisfied with it. Hope a lot of people will read this lens. 5*

Some very good points made here. My children's packed lunch is always put together in a reusable container.

Since I pack lunches for my kids almost every day, I started researching reusable sandwich and snack bags about a month ago. I found wrap-n-mat and made one for each child (I have 3 daughters). Those have worked really well. I attempted a snack bag and it worked ok, but not great. So I kept looking for a better design and just found reusies.com yesterday. I have made 3 bags similar to their design and the girls love them. I don't sew so I used my hot glue gun. It worked amazingly well. I'm not going to throw them in the washing machine like reusies can be, but I they can be wiped off with a wet rag and are good to go again. I'm using left over fabric lined with clear contact paper and letting the girls choose their colors so they want to use their snack bags. And I made their sandwich wraps out of their favorite color fabric.

Outstanding! I checked out the site and will be adding it shortly. I'm also impressed with the idea of using a hot glue gun. I wouldn't have thought that it would hold up, but it sounds like it's doing it's job. Thank you!
