From the lens Green Smoothies.

  • mtsoccer4 Apr 14, 2012 @ 1:35 am | delete
Very nice, comprehensive lens. I have a green shake every day (and have for the last two years) for breakfast and have noticed a huge difference in energy and immunity. I took time to work greens in, starting with just a little bit of wheatgrass powder. This is a great resource for anyone getting started.

Admittedly I have not tried your smoothies yet. I am thinking of trying them. However, I have not liked other peoples smoothies either. I like fruits and vegetables, I'm just having trouble with the whole 'smoothie' idea. Why are they so creepy to swallow? I would like to do more for my health.

Wow! Sounds uber healthy! Have you ever tried an avacado smoothie? They are delicious too!
  • OrganicSkin Apr 1, 2012 @ 12:04 am | delete
Yes I do put avocado in my smoothies from time to time, especially when i add cacao to a smoothie, as it needs some fat with it to make it taste more chocolatey.

I am allergic to many fruits. Incl. bananas, pears, apple and peaches. What can I do to make my smoothies have a creamy texture if I cannot add any of these.
    Any suggestions, please?
    Thanks a million!
    Gabriela
  • OrganicSkin Mar 4, 2012 @ 9:26 pm | delete
Hi Gabriela, sorry to hear about the fruit allegies, that must be frustrating. There are ways of making a green smoothie creamier such as using nut milks instead of water, or ading some nuts or nut butter to the smoothie. Hemp seeds are a fabululous addition to green smoothies. They break down easily, tasta delicious and not as heavy as nuts can be. They also have an ideal ratio of omega 6:3 oils unlike maost other nuts and seeds which are way higher in omega 6. Using chia seeds (even beter for omega 3) will add thickness to a smoothie but not creaminess. If you freeze fruit you can eat and blend the frozen ingredients, as this can add a creamier element. Green smoothies are known as a raw, plant based drinks, however if you are not opposed to animal products you could use a raw egg. Good luck!

OMG these sound great. I went into a health store once and they where making these green smoothies can't remember exactly what was in them though. They looked horrible but one sip of this smoothie and I couldn't believe how nice it was.

Going to give some of these recipes a go. My wife and I are currently on the diet solution program and we are losing weight pretty fast and because it's fun we're always looking for healthy ideas so thanks for your recipes and great lens.

I have scanned the internet for info and answers to my questions. THIS ARTICLE is above and beyond AMAZING!! THANK YOU SOOO MUCH! The raw foods diet is suppose to be simplistic, however, so many make it so difficult. Thank you for answering my question about fats...Dr. Grahm has me all confused on all of that, especially since I feel, personally, that some fats are important to the body and I do not believe, PERSONALLY, that all fats are created equal. THANKS AGAIN!

Kristine, that's the most comprehensive green smoothie guide I've read since the Green Smoothie Revolution. :) And a great tip about adding vanilla extract to cut down on the "greenness" I'll have to give that a try some of those greens can get a bit overpowering. We started drinking green smoothies awhile ago and my daughter dubbed them 'the smoothie you can chew' (I think we need a better blender...) Here was our first green smoothie recipe: http://naturalhealthgoodies.com/18/the-smoothie-you-can-chew-our-first-green-smoothie-recipe

I visited this page more than 3 years ago but it is great to come across it once more a the information on green smoothies and the recipes are amazing. Green smoothies have been a part of my daily routine for a few years now and I just cannot get enough of them. I grow my own greens mostly and also use a lot of wild edible weeds that grow naturally around my property. I am glad to find this page again so that now as a Squid Angel I can give it a blessing. Awesome stuff. :-)

Great Lens. I'm wondering when you indicate the smoothies should be 40% veggies - is that by weight? Volume? Just not sure how much veggies to put in. I'm sure the immediate answer is as much as I can drink and still like the taste, but still curious how to estimate my % of veggies in the smoothie. Thanks for your response!

I think you've covered all bases with this lens and if not, the books that you've listed are great resources. Because, most people don't realize what comes under the list of "greens," making a list would be very helpful. Who knew you can blend up those beet greens instead of discarding them??!!!

I believe everyone should get the book, The China Study, above all else, at least to start! The public has no clue what dairy and animal products do to promote illness and disease.

Glad you included the explanation of combining fats with fruits in the smoothies. Even though I've always mixed them, there was always that concern.

Kudos to such a wonderful and helpful lens hoping it will inspire those to take a leap and enjoy green smoothies, while enjoying fantastic health! I've always said, one green smoothie and day keeps the man in the white coat away! And for those of you who don't think they can "stomach" the taste of these recipes --- you will be pleasantly surprised!!

Yum! I just started drinking green smoothies two weeks ago and I can really feel the difference! My favorite is Dr. Oz's with cucumber, parsley, kale, apple, lemon juice, ginger, celery. I like a little green pepper in there, too. Tastes....Green! I'd like to try some of your recipes though. Which is your absolute favorite?
  • OrganicSkin Jan 16, 2011 @ 3:08 am | delete
My faves are 'mint madness' and the 'sexiest green smoothie ever'. Have you tried making your own? The energy form a freshly made smoothie will always surpass that of a bought one. Thanks for the feedback and I am thrilled green smoothies are doing it for you!! Cheers Kristine
  • scalablesocial Jan 23, 2011 @ 1:48 pm | delete
Cool! I'll have to try those. Yeah, for about 3 weeks I have been making the recipe Dr. Oz recommended. I tried adding avocado in there and that's nice, too. I definitely notice the difference in how I feel. Thanks for a great lens.

I am so excited to try these! However, I do not have a blender and my limited funds are preventing me from buying one at the moment, so would it be possible to make a very large batch of smoothies and freeze for later use?

Thanks for sharing all of this. Your page has some many awesome looking recipes!
  • OrganicSkin Jan 7, 2011 @ 9:36 pm | delete
    Hi Emily,
I have never frozen and thawed out a smoothie but I reckon it wouldn't be that great. You will also lose some nutrients from the freezing process I imagine. You can buy pretty cheap blenders. I know in Australia you can buy them for under $100 and they are still pretty good for daily use. Smoothies just don't work in any other machine. I have tried in friends food processors and with stick mixes when traveling and its horrible! Good luck finding a cheap blender it will be worth it to make them fresh every day.
  • loretta Jan 14, 2011 @ 6:34 pm | delete
    Emily,
I am a newbie to green smoothies. Just finished my first week of them and love the drink and the way I am feeling. I have been using my standard blender to make them. I blend kale, romaine, an apple, a banana, some strawberries, parsley, blueberries with filtered water, lemon juice an a bit of oj for sweetness and my blender is handling this just fine. Until it breaks down, I will continue to use it. My smoothies are creamy and delicious. I just let it blend while i pack my lunch for work. My blender is not smoking or burning up either. Just to let you know. I have a Hamilton Beach Wave Action Smoothie Dispenser Blender. It does the job.

  • OrganicSkin Dec 28, 2010 @ 5:51 am | delete
Hi Diane, I am in Australia so where I get my greens won't be particularly helpful to you. However, I get my greens ideally from my garden and my Mum's garden, from the weekly veggie box co-op I am in, from farmers markets and as a last resort from the supermarket where I will make sure they are thoroughly rinsed with a splash of apple cider vinegar to aid removal of any pesticide residues.

    Very nice lens!
Gives me a lot of inspiration for my own green smoothies lens. I'm living in Belgium, so my lens is Dutch especially for the dutch speaking community.
But, Dutch green smoothies tastes also very good!
    Thanks a lot, Kristine

Thank you for the recipes and the info about green smoothies. I've been reading about them for awhile now on various websites, but this is my first visit to squidoo, wasn't sure what it was about...really loved your article. I also just had my first green smoothie this morning as I was reading your page...watermelon, apple and kale. Not bad for a first one, I just used what I had :) I love the idea of them and want to incorporate more green smoothies in my regular diet!

This all started for me a few days ago. A friend sent a link to a youtube raw foods video, then my exhusband shared he's been drinking green smoothies for two months and lost 20 lbs and his eye sight has fantastically improved. I started yesterday eating raw, this morning I whipped up some beet, carrot, apple, tomato, pineapple and green beans with some water in my Vitamix and let me say this...my bowels are already improved after ONE day! I can't wait to see the results after a two week period and then some ...

These are great ideas but so many of the green smoothie recipes feature bananas. Maybe post some more that don't rely on bananas?
  • OrganicSkin Jul 12, 2010 @ 9:10 am | delete
Hi Laurena, you are right the majority of my smoothie recipes are banana based. There are 7 out of the 18 that are bananas-less however. I have been working on recipes that are banana-free more recently and will work on more! Thanks for the feedback.

    Cheers Kristine
  • hopefulvalley Aug 14, 2010 @ 9:13 am | delete
I have been trying to have more fruit smoothies in the mornings for breakfast the last few months, although today was my first green smoothie. I think a lot of them use bananas because bananas make the consistency more, well, smooth. Not using bananas makes everything more liquid and a bit coarse, which takes some getting used to, although I find the non-banana smoothies a bit more refreshing. I plan to experiment a lot using what I have and what I know I like.

Just getting started and can't believe the difference - aches are gone! Glad to get the tip about vanilla and also to learn about chia. Wondering if anyone has tried adding mesquite pods/beans to smoothies? I live in the desert with 3 trees that give off buckets of pods. I'd love to put them to use in an easy way - I can see tossing them into my Blendtec rather than the trash. Thanks for all the recipes and information : )
  • OrganicSkin Jul 4, 2010 @ 2:24 am | delete
Great news Florence! Re mesquite pods, I don't know how to create the powder from the pods however I have certainly used mesquite powder as a superfood powder in my smoothies from time to time. This is what Loving Earth (www.lovingearth.com.au) has to say about Mesquite:
Mesquite meal is a traditional Native American food produced by gathering ripened seed-pods from the mesquite tree and grinding them into a fine powder. Used as a staple food for centuries by desert dwellers, this high protein meal contains good quantities of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and zinc, and is rich in the amino acid lysine as well. It has a sweet, rich, molasses-like flavor with a hint of caramel which blends well into smoothies or other drinks, especially those made with cacao and maca.
Researchers report that mesquite is highly effective in balancing blood sugar. The natural sweetness in the pods comes from fructose. Fructose doesn't require insulin to be metabolised -- making it safe for diabetics. The high rate of dietary fibre, pods are 25% fibre, causes the nutrients in mesquite to be absorbed slowly preventing the spikes and valleys in blood sugar. With a low glycemic index of 25, mesquite requires a longer time to digest then many grains. The digestive time for mesquite is to 4 to 6 hours unlike wheat that digests in 1 to 2 hours. These factors result in a food that maintains a constant blood sugar for a sustained time and as a result prevents hunger. Here is a food that supports the diabetic's diet and helps maintain a healthy insulin system in those not affected with blood sugar problem.

Hi - thanks for the info - I just wanted to say that the book you mentioned in 'What's the big deal about greens?' is Green for LIfe not Fit for Life. I also appreciate you mentioning Victoria Boutenko, as she is the person who researched Chimpanzees and discovered the importance of greens which led to the green smoothie. Her blog has amazing research on it http://www.greensmoothiesblog.com. I feel that by mentioning her, you have shown integrity. Peace.

Thanks for the vanilla tip. My fav greens are the kale, or a parsley with peaches. I add about a TBsp chia seeds to all of my smoothies (get them in my c hildren) and they don't gel too much. Of course, we aren't leaving the smoothie sitting around oxydizing anyways, but its never thickened up too much.
Thanks for the lens. Right down my alley.

Carrot tops goes perfectly with pineapple, mango, melon and blueberries.

You can use just one of those or a combination, and you can use fresh or frozen fruit. Adding a banana will make the smoothie creamy.

Often it is possible to get the carrot tops for free in the supermarket.

To those a bit apprehensive about drinking something so green, well, what's to loose? If the greens are overpowering, just add more fruit to the smoothie. :-)
