Blown Cellulose Insulation

Having proper insulation is critical to your homes energy efficiency. The government has recently recognized the importance of insulation in relation to energy efficiency, and has included it in the list of materials it will reward home owners for purchasing under the most recent stimulus act.

Cellulose insulation is one of the best materials to use when insulating a building or home. Cellulose insulation is composed of bits of recycled newspaper shredded, and then blown in a cavity to insulate the area. Cellulose insulation is very efficient, cost effective, and extremely Eco-friendly.

Adding cellulose insulation to your home can save you enormous amounts of money on your energy costs each year. It is common to see a savings of 25% or more, after attic insulation is installed. The installation process is typically completed in one day.

How much attic insulation do I need in my attic?

Attic insulation is measured in r-value. The higher the r-value, the more energy efficient your home will be.

A good starting point when determining the r-value of the attic insulation in your home, is to identify the material you currently have installed and measure its depth. All insulation materials hold a specific r-value for every inch installed.

Fiberglass holds an r-value of 2.5 per inch installed. Cellulose has an r-value of 3.1 per inch installed.

So what does this mean?

In the St. Louis region, it is recommended that we have a minimum r-value of 38 for maximum energy efficiency. Attic insulation containing this r-value creates a solid thermal barrier and keeps energy costs low.

This means that you need at least 15" of fiberglass or 12" of cellulose to be at the recommended r-value in our region.

Cellulose Insulation compared to fiberglass.

Which is better?

Everyone is familiar with standard fiberglass batt insulation, which has been used in residential home construction for years. But there is a new insulating material available... blown cellulose insulation.

Which is better?

We will review both insulation types, and you can decide for yourself.

Standard fiberglass has stood the test of time, that's for sure, but it certainly isn't the most efficient material out there. Fiberglass insulation has a typical R-value of about 2.5 per square inch. That's at the bottom of the list, in terms of efficiency. Fiberglass insulation, is very inexpensive. That's something we can all appreciate of course! Yet while fiberglass is low cost, unfortunately, it's not the most healthy. Fiberglass insulation must be installed in a sealed location, and left untouched. It can be harmful and irritating to the skin, and even more harmful, if its accidentally inhaled. Not only is this type of material not good for us, it's bad for the environment.

As you can see, fiberglass insulation has its pro's and con's. Now lets take a look at one of the newer products out there... Blown Cellulose Insulation.

Blown Cellulose insulation is a new material that has recently become very popular. There are many factors that make this insulation in our opinion, at the top of the list. When compared to fiberglass in terms of efficiency, blown cellulose consistently outperforms it. This type of insulation has an R-value of roughly 3.1 per square inch.

When we look at the price of blown cellulose insulation compared to fiberglass, they are definitely close! In most cases and depending on the specific installation methods, cellulose tends to be just a bit cheaper.

Blown cellulose is non irritating to the skin, and lungs, and has no harmful chemicals. Cellulose is great for the environment as well, It's made from recycled newspaper. It doesn't get much better than that!

Improve attic energy efficiency... Add insulation to your attic access points.

Custom built attic fan coverAlthough they are frequently overlooked, attic access points are very important areas to properly insulate. Typically, attic access points that are located within the home are nothing more than a piece of drywall or plywood. These materials alone, have an r-value that is next to nothing.

It is critical when insulating an attic space to insulate the access points as well. This can be done by adding rigid or (even better) spray foam insulation to these locations. This creates a barrier for the transfer of thermal energy into and out of the living space.

Blown Cellulose Insulation & Soundproofing.

Green Space Construction - St. Louis' Premier Attic Insulation Installer!

Are you experiencing irritating noises coming from the interior or exterior of your home or office?

If so, you may want to consider soundproofing your living space.

The purpose of soundproofing is to absorb the sound waves and prevent and reduce reverberation by blocking and/or absorbing the sound source. Blown in cellulose is capable of absorbing these low frequency sound waves resulting in a remarkable reduction in the amount of noise pollution you will be exposed too. The density of cellulose that fills the cavity of the building's frame or wall will dampen the loudness of the sound creating a peaceful environment for you to live in.

If you are being affected by noise pollution, you can use cellulose in your sidewalls and ceilings to curb the loud noise. It is important to reduce noise pollution as much as possible because exposure to high levels of noise can lead to a number of physiological and psychological issues.

If you are experiencing noise pollution and are interested in soundproofing, Green Space Construction can help you. We are an insulation contractor in St. Louis, Mo.
