Michigan's Gem Stone

Chlorastrolite or Greenstone for short is the gem stone for Michigan.

The little known gemstone

The greenstone or chlorastrolite, is Michigan's gem stone. It is found in the Keweenaw Peninsula in the Upper Peninsula. The superior stones were found on Isle Royale. It is very rare and the high quality ones are very hard to come by. When polished it takes a very high shine and makes very nice jewelry.

Turtle back Gemstone

The greenstone is said to resemble a turtle's back as the pattern resembles a turtle's back. The Petoskey stone is also said to resemble the turtle's back.
They each have a cell-like feature.

About bjslapidary

Hello world. I'm new at this.  My husband and I have a little lapidary business in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  We sell minerals and lapidary supplies.  We sell Lake Superior Agates, Petoskey Stones, Greenstones and many other rocks and minerals.

We also sell postcards, many Michigan.

I paint and love to do Watercolors.  Just this past summer I discovered carving in soapstone and find it very rewarding.  I hope to venture into this more.
