To demonstrate that commitment, we continue to take steps to minimize our impact on the environment and recycle more and more renewable resources each year.
We also are closely involved in programs that promote environmental causes. Abt Electronics is proud to be a part of the "CoolGlobes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet" project, running from June through September in the city of Chicago. This exhibit uses public art-in this case, more than 100 sculpted globes, each measuring five feet in diameter-to inspire people to take action against global warming.
The globes, designed by artists from around the world, are being displayed along Chicago's lakefront, and Abt Electronics is honored to be sponsoring the Energy Star globe. Energy Star is a government-backed program that awards a star to household appliances, electronics, office equipment, and building materials to signify that they meet federal energy-efficiency standards.
To maintain our commitment to the environment, Abt Electronics takes an active, "Green" approach in the following areas:
Recycling
- We currently recycle 1.5 million pounds of cardboard and paper each year.
- We recycle about 120,000 pounds of Styrofoam per year. This enables us to save 150 loads of garbage from going to the landfill. We save another 200 loads by recycling cardboard.
- We recycle 20,000 pallets each year.
- We recycle 5 tractor-trailer loads of appliances each day.
- We are currently building a recycling center next to our main building. This will be able to recycle customers' cardboard, Styrofoam, and appliances (even those that weren't bought at Abt). We are hoping to power the building with a mixture of wind and solar power.
- We recycle all batteries and cell phones.
Building Improvements
- We generate our own power from natural gas with our own co-generators. Natural gas is much cleaner than coal burning.
- We use Pulsar lights in our warehouse. These are 17% more efficient than regular lights. Also, sensors turn off lights in areas that are not in use.
- We are using high-efficiency oversized fans in our warehouse, so less heating is required in the winter and less air conditioning in the summer.
Delivery Fleet
- We maintain our own trucks and keep them running efficiently. We do this on site so there is no need to have them driven elsewhere for maintenance and repairs.
- We allow our drivers to end their day at their homes so the delivery vehicles only make one trip to the store each day. This cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions.
- We are putting in a very efficient 90% recycled water system in our own truck wash.
- We have our own segmented fuel tanks, and our big trucks run on a biodiesel mixture in the summer months.
Employee Programs
- We offer our employees a hot lunch choice on site each day so they don't have to travel somewhere else, which helps to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.
- We provide a workout facility with weight machines, treadmills, a basketball court, a racquetball court, and showers so employees don't have to travel elsewhere to exercise, which also helps to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. They can also ride their bikes to work and take a shower if needed.
- We educate our sales people, making sure they are familiar with programs such as the Energy Star rating system. We often sell customers on the idea of paying a little more now but saving money in the long run, while at the same time conserving energy and reducing their impact on the environment.
