It is Time for Tea!

The only thing in the world that people drink more than tea is water! If you don't drink tea, what are you waiting for? It has countless health benefits (and it is delicious).

What is Tea?

Did you know that white, green, and black tea come from the same plant? The basic kinds of "non-herbal" tea come from the leaves, buds & stalks of the evergreen known as the camellia sinensis. Black tea is fermented. Green tea is not fermented and is less processed. White tea is made from very young leaves, when they are still buds. It is processed as little as possible and is more rare than green tea. Green tea has been described as "grassy", where as white tea is sweeter and lighter.

Herbal teas are not made from the "tea" plant, technically they are not really tea. They are usually made with flowers and herbs. Rooibos, or red tea is also not made from the tea plant. Many are naturally caffeine free. Many of the flavored green, white and black teas also contain herbal blends.

What is so Great about Tea?

Polyphenols are the chemicals that give tea its cancer fighting properties. Tea also contains an amino acid theanine that is only found in tea!

Tea has been praised for numerous health benefits including:
  • Fights mutagenic (cancer causing) agents
  • Delays aging
  • Fights high blood pressure
  • Helps fight against viral and bacterial infection
  • Improve the functions of the digestive and excretory systems.
  • Helps prevent blood clotting
  • Lowers cholesterol levels
  • Stimulate the immune system
  • Aids in weight loss (by increasing metabolism)
  • Freshen breath
  • Prevents tooth decay (contains fluoride)

Which Kind is Best?

Taste-wise, what is best depends on your taste. Health-wise, white tea is the best for you. The young, fairly unprocessed buds contain the most antioxidant power. White tea also contains the least caffeine (15 mg). I find the light taste to be the most refreshing, and it makes great iced tea. White tea is more rare, however, and therefore is more expensive. For a more economical choice, green tea provides tons of protective antioxidants with only 20 mg of caffeine (black tea contains about 40 mg).

Tea is Very Versatile

With so many different types, blends, and flavors, you will find something to suit you! There are even different ways to make tea. Loose leaf will require a special basket, but makes really fresh tasting tea. Tea bags are very convenient. Tea pyramids allow for more expansion of the tea leaves when heating, getting a flavor closer to loose leaf tea.

Have you tried to drink tea, knowing its benefits, but you just couldn't bear the taste? Green tea does have a decidedly different flavor than black tea, but if it tastes extremely bitter it has not been brewed properly. Green tea should not be made with boiling water! It should be made with hot water, and it should not be allowed to brew for longer than stated on the package. Boiling water will burn the tea, which gives it a very bitter flavor. Properly made green tea should be light tasting.

If you still don't like the taste, try adding some honey or making the tea iced. To make iced tea either brew the tea with 2 teabags and poor over ice after allowing proper brew time, or chill regular strength tea. Icing the tea will help reduce the bitterness, try it! Another thing you can do is add a bag of herbal tea (or buy flavored tea). Adding a bag of blueberry or raspberry herbal tea to your iced green tea will further disguise the flavor. You will find that tea is an acquired taste and soon you won't be able to get enough of it!

Green Tea Shouldn't Taste Overly Bitter!

If it does, the water you used was TOO hot or you let it brew for too long.

Yogi Tea is my absolute favorite brand. It is delicious and healthy. Many are packed with special herbal blends. Amazon sells cases for way less per box than you will pay in the store.

Stash Tea: Case Prices

My very close second favorite brand of tea. Lots of great varieties, and and awesome price for excellent quality. Stash also packs their tea bags in foil. I find that they stay fresh for a long time.

More Stash Tea: Case Prices

OK, I like Stash tea so much that I couldn't pick just 5 kinds. If you can't choose either, here are some sampler boxes.

Celestial Seasonings Tea: Case Prices

Probably a more well known name, Celestial Seasonings also makes high quality, delicious teas for fair prices. Their herbal teas are especially refreshing.

Loose Tea

Loose tea is a more rewarding experience, but it takes a little more time (and a teapot with a strainer or a ball).
