Secret for a Healthier Life
For years doctors have suspected that green tea possesses remarkable healing properties. The Japanese and Chinese have been drinking it for centuries and their cancer rate is among the lowest in the world. Decades of study have shown that even moderate amounts of the "wonder substance" can prevent disease and actually lengthen life.
Go For the Green
Next time you're opting for that morning cup of whatever, go for the green. Green tea (the kind you're usually served in Japanese restaurants) has been shown to have terrific healing properties.
Studies show that drinking 4 to 6 cups a day can dramatically reduce the risk of many types of cancer including liver, breast, lung, pancreatic and skin cancers. Researchers think the tea works as a sort of super anti-oxidant, able to block the interaction of tumor promoters.
Green tea also lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke, by preventing the development of blockages in the arteries. It also keeps blood sugars at a healthfully low level, and helps combat viruses.
Who knew all that good stuff could be found in one little tea bag?

Green tea boosts production of detox enzymes
rendering cancerous chemicals harmless
These findings, published in the August issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, suggest that a green tea concentrate might help some people strengthen their metabolic defense against toxins capable of causing cancer.
In a study of 42 people, the concentrate, composed of chemicals known as green tea catechins in amounts equal to that found in 8-16 cups of green tea, boosted production of the enzymes, which belong to the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family, by as much as 80 percent in some participants.
GST enzymes are believed to be crucial to the body's defense against cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins, according to the study's lead investigator, H.-H. Sherry Chow, Ph.D., a research associate professor at the University of Arizona. They modify the cancer-causing molecules that would otherwise damage cellular DNA, thus rendering them inert.
"They actually convert known carcinogens to non-toxic chemicals, and studies have shown a correlation between deficient expression of these enzymes and increased risk of developing some cancers," Chow said.

The Story of Green Tea
The Japanese custom of drinking green tea came from China about 800 AD. The use of tea started when Buddhist monks, who had gone to China for study, returned to Japan bringing tea with them as a medicinal beverage.
We now have many medical reports and studies by accredited institutions concluding that Green Tea does contain many healthful and healing properties.

What will Green Tea do for you?
Polyphenols in green tea may protect against Parkinson's disease and Prostate Cancer. In laboratory tests, green tea has inhibited the growth of skin cancers in mice and protected against lung cancer in animals exposed to a strong tobacco extract. Human tea drinkers also showed less stomach cancer and stroke than those who didn't include tea among their habits.
Habitual tea consumption for more than a decade increased total-body bone mineral density.
Green Tea enhances immune function. The active ingredients (polyphenols) promote immunity from many different pathogens, including protozoa, viruses and bacteria. Green tea fights free radicals, the chemicals now thought to be the most important cause of cell damage and aging.
It is a more potent antioxidant than broccoli, carrots, spinach, or strawberries. Green tea strongly benefits oral health--it kills the bacteria responsible for tooth decay and blocks the attachment of the bacteria associated with dental caries to the teeth.
With a host of beneficial effects for the cardiovascular system, it has been shown to balance total cholesterol and LDL, as well as triglycerides, and to support a healthy ratio of LDL cholesterol to HDL cholesterol.
STUDIES SUGGEST TEA BURNS CALORIES
Recent studies have suggested that tea may increase metabolism, and perhaps promote weight loss. One study from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that men who drank five cups of oolong tea burned 2.9 percent more calories in a 24-hour period than when they drank plain water (they burned 3.4 percent more calories when they drank five cups of water laced with caffeine). Another study, from Switzerland, found that men who took green tea extract plus caffeine burned 3-4 percent more calories than those who took caffeine alone or a placebo. Although only a total of 22 men took part in the two studies combined and results can't be considered conclusive, several manu- facturers have already added tea extracts to supple- ments which claim to boost metabolism.
