Software Needed to Make Greeting Cards

You don't need to spend a lot of money

Most artists use more than one application to make their greeting cards. I've listed some popular programs below. My advice would be to go slowly, investigate your needs, consider your budget, and buy one program at a time. You may find that's all you need. If not, having used one program, you'll be in a better position to know what you need in another program. There's no reason to spend a lot of money.

Investigate the programs below and see if any of them serve your needs.

Software Suggestion - Paint Shop Pro

This is one of the programs I use. I find that it does much of what I need.

Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 Ultimate [Old Version]

Amazon Price: $34.98 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

This is one of the applications I used to make greeting cards. There are a few choices in this areas, and everyone has their own opinion as to which is the better software. Paint Shop Pro is one of the least expensive options, and it has many of the same features as Photoshop, a much more expensive option.

While you can get an older version of this software for less money, I advise you to spend the extra $20 or so and get the most current version. You don't have to upgrade to a new version every year, but why not start out with the most current?

Software Suggestion - Photoshop Elements

This is a good alternative to the full Photoshop program.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 [Old Version]

Image Requirements

There is a template available to artists in your storefront. Images and Cards -->Download Card Template
I advise you to use this, even after you gain experience.

Your images should be 1500 x 2100 or 2100 x 1500, depending on whether your card is portrait or landscape.

Uploading your Images

Log into the GCU web site.

Hover your cursor over "Images and Cards" and then click on "Create a Card"
Click on "Browse" and navigate to the image you want to upload.
Click on the image you want to upload and then click "Open"

Now you're back to the CGU web page. Click "Upload image(s)

You can upload more than one image at a time.

Once your image is uploaded, scroll down until you see a thumbnail of the image.

Click on "Select".
Type in a title for your card.

(In subsequent cards, all spaces on this page will be populated with the title of the previous card.)

Fill in keywords. Your keywords should describe all elements of the card. See "Keywording Your Cards Correctly" below)

If you want the artist credit to appear on the front of your card, check the box "Print "Image by:" credits on the card". Now that artist credits appear on the back of the cards, I don't use this feature.

The next section lets you offer this card as a free e-card. These cards are only available in your storefront, not in the free e-cards section currently listed at the top of each GCU web page.

Copyright Watermark - Check this box if you want a copyright watermark to appear on your on-line images. This offers some protection against other misusing your images. The copyright watermark will not appear on the printed card.

Card Finish - Choose glossy or matte.

Private Card - Check this option if you've made a card just for your use or a special order card.

Category - Choose the most appropriate category for your card. See "Putting Your Cards into the Proper Category" below.

Click the "Next" button to go to the Card Inside Text page.

Click on the section that says "Click here to edit Bottom (or right, depending on the card orientation) message" Choose the font, font color, and type your inside message. Cards with inside messages sell better on GCU. Please note that this section will pre-populated with the message from your previous card if this isn't your first card.)

Click "Next" to go to the Profile Card page.

Profile the card for the occasion, the relationship of the person receiving the card, the age category of the person receiving the card, and the gender of the sender and receiver of the card.

Click "Next" and your card is submitted for approval!

Approval may take a while on weekends or right before a major holiday.

Putting Your Cards into the Proper Category

While you are offered the opportunity to place your cards in two categories, sometimes only one is necessary. Finding your way around the categories can be a daunting task for a beginner, but with time you will become comfortable.

If you submit a card in the wrong category, you will be informed in an e-mail by a GCU card reviewer. Don't take this as a reprimand! It's a learning experience we have all gone through.

Often, I will look through the categories before making a card to see what cards are available. I will also look for categories that don't have many cards in them.

Keywording Your Cards Correctly

Keywording is probably the most confusing thing for new artists at GCU. I've gotten it wrong more than once.

Keywording should describe the card. The colors and the elements. This is not my strength, so I'm always learning new things and going back to update the keywords on my cards.

My keywords for the card you see here are:
happy birthday, purple, pink, flower, floral, garden, green

I often go back and refine my keywords as I learn more about the process.

Marketing Your Greeting Card Universe Store

There are many free ways to market your cards.

Twitter - Sign up for a free account and "twitter" your cards occasionally. My advise would be to twitter once a week or so, not every time you upload a new card. Otherwise, people will see it as spam and not pay attention to your postings.

Perhaps the easiest ways to market your cards is to put your store address in your e-mail signature. That way, everyone to whom you send an e-mail will be reminded that you sell greeting cards.
Once you're logged into your GCU account, go to Community-->Card Widget.
Click on "Get HTML"
Scroll down to "Promotional E-mail Link" Using this link not only provides a link to your card store, but if a card is bought by someone who clicked on the e-mail promotional link, you receive a seller's commission.
Place this link in your e-mail program. Each e-mail program has a different way of making a signature.

Card Widget - The card widget can be put on your web site.
Once you're logged into your GCU account, go to Community-->Card Widget. Like the e-mail promotional link above, you receive a seller's commission is someone purchases a card after clicking on the widget.

Set up a blog or web site - Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may provide you with space for a web site, or you can sign up for a free account at Blogger or Word Press for a blog.

Make a web page like this! - Make a Squidoo page, like the page you're on now, to promote your cards.

How to get Help at GCU

The staff and fellow artists on Greeting Card Universe are very helpful. You can access this help by going to the GCU forum. A link to the forum is on the top of each page once you're logged into your GCU account.

Tips on getting help in the GCU forum:

Be sure to place your question in the correct category.

Outline your question completely.

If you're reporting a problem, outline any steps you took to correct the problem.

Include any error message you got.

Be patient. While fellow artists may be able to help you in many cases, some problems need the intervention of staff members Mindy or Shaun.

Wacom Tablet and Graphics Software

A tablet is essential if you want to "hand draw" your work on the computer. Drawing with a mouse is difficult and time consuming. This Wacom tablet comes with older versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements and Corel Painter Essentials. These tablet are available in larger sizes, but I have this size and have no problem wit the smaller size.

Tablets are also helpful for photo editing.
