Behold the Devil
My first encounter with Grendel was through reading Beowulf. However, I never thought much of Grendel as anything other than a monster for the hero to fight until reading John Gardner's Grendel novel. The novel really examined Grendel's role in the world (and the role of every monster ever created).
Grendel is a legacy in the English language. However, this lens focuses on Matt Wagner's great comic icon of Grendel.

Matt Wagner's Legacy
While this concept was quickly explored by other writer/artists, Matt Wagner has made it his own. The stories are still great to this day.

:For the monster from the Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf, see Grendel. For other uses, see Grendel (disambiguation).
Grendel is a long-running series of comic books originally created by American author Matt Wagner. First published by Comico, Wagner has now moved his character to Dark Horse. Originally a noir comic in the style of European titles such as Diabolik, it has evolved into, in Wagner's words, a study of the nature of aggression.
