The Griffin Survivor heavy duty case

The Griffin Survivor heavy duty case is something i stumbled across shortly after i got my iphone 4s.
As a soldier i was worried about the safety of my phone while either on the ranges/exercise or operations, i have had it now for two months and used it in all types of environments.
for a practical reveiw on the Griffin read on, a reveiw that has been constructed on actual usage.

GRIFFIN SURVIVORFirst off lets look at the spec and features,

1. Fits iPhone 4 models from all carriers

2. Independently tested and certified to meet conditions outlined in US Department of Defense MIL-STD-810 and UK Department of Defense Def-Stan 00-35

3. Integral Display shield deflects wind and rain (Test: up to 200 mm/hr for 1 hour)

4. Rigid internal frame protects against shocks and drops (Test: drop on flat concrete surface from 6'/1.8 m)

5. Sealed ports block blown sand and dust (Test: up to 18 m/sec for 1 hour)

6. Silicone cladding blocks vibration (Test: 18 hrs at 20 to 2000 Hz)

7. Multi-position clip attaches securely to pack strap or belt

Some impressive claims, i was eager and hopefull that i could confidently carry my iphone with me at work, so i bought one.
My first observations after fitting were that this case obviously made the phone more bulky but in all honesty this only served to make the iphone easier to grip and handle, the rubber outer casing felt sturdy, and fantastically shaped to fit the inner pieces perfectly with a quality feel to it.
There are hinged plugs to access the dock connector, headphone port, main camera lense, hold switch and volume controls, these all fit perfectly and from the moment you open and close one you feel that they will seal, two small issues for me are that the main camera plug can be a little difficult to open and the inner casing shrouds the hold switch a little too much, the switch is accessable but unless you have small finger its a little difficult to reach.

The integeral screen protector works very well (even when wet) , only problem i have found, and its in no way a massive one, is that for those of us with larger finger tips, the outer keyboard keys need extra attention as the raised screen edges are quite close.

The sound from the earpiece and speakers are great and not muffled or reduced at all, this is due to tiny holes in optimum places.
The external buttons which connect to the volume buttons and home button on the front are perfectly aligned and responsive.

This is quoted from the griffin website ;
"Tested and certified to meet or exceed US Department of Defense Standard 810F and UK Department of Defense Standard 00-35, Griffin's Survivor Extreme-Duty Case is designed from the inside out to protect your iPhone from extreme conditions ... dirt, sand, rain, shock, vibration and a host of other environmental factors.
Survivor is built on a shatter-resistant polycarbonate frame clad in rugged, shock absorbing silicone. A built-in screen protector seals your Multi-Touch display from the outside environment, with hinged plugs that seal the dock connector, headphone port, hold switch and volume controls. A detachable heavy-duty clip secures your iPhone to a belt or bag strap"

Over the past two months i have put some of what is claimed to the test, i have....

Used the case on most of my duties, alot of rain has been repelled by the Griffin with it remaining operable,
dropped in snow and left for an hour, (unknowingly), no detriment to phone
protected from minus 10 conditions, fully operational

And recently i had a range day where we spent the day crawling around and firing assault rifles at varying targets, temperature was around 4 degrees and rained on and off, my phone was located in my combat jacket chest pocket and often took the weight and shock of me getting into the prone position ( firing while laying on my front) on a regular basis, not to mention rifle recoil.

Generally i remove the strap/belt clip but do use it on occasion to attach to my webbing, it is extremely simple to fit and remove yet impressively effective, it also swivels 360 degrees and has a great feature that is also my favourite feature, not only does it click lock when closed but also locks open so it can be used as a stand.

Overall the design and appearance looks and feels pure quality, the silicone case is non slip and all parts are easy to clean, in my opinion this is the best protection you can get for your iphone.
I am so glad i got it and would recomend it to any one with any concerns about their iphones saftey while at work, in fact with its many great features and function, protection and design i would recomend to anyone who has an iphone, plus it comes in Black, Grey, Pink and white.

I hope this reveiw has helped and please just ask if you have any questions, i will do my best to answer.

That's interesting - like most civilians, I suppose, it never crossed my mind that you'd need to think about special protection for your phones when deployed.
