NO SPEECH PREPARED...

A Gambler's Guide to the 81st Annual Academy Awards (by Wadrick Jones)

February '09 Article

It's almost time again for the Oscars - that back-slapping, tear-fest that celebrates Hollywood's finest. It still astounds me that the Academy Awards retain an audience each year - the ceremony is almost sickeningly self-congratulatory and overstays its welcome by a good three hours. Yet, save for last year, I still manage to watch this event each and every year due to a history that stretches back to adolescence.

Since we were in high school, a small group of close friends and I have wagered on the Oscars outcome. We select our winners and have them sent to each other by midnight on the preceding day, the promise of a cash booty haunting our minds as though we ourselves had been nominated for an award. For twenty-odd years we have competed, and for twenty-odd years I have lost. I can recall a singular time when I did take out the honours, nosing out my closest opponent in the Hollywood horse race and taking the cold hard cash prize. But this is a sad indictment on someone who prides himself on his movie knowledge and something I aim to reverse this year...perhaps.

'Tis the Season to Sloth & Watch Movies

(by Wadrick Jones)

December '08 Article

In Australia, before the advent of Cable TV (we're talking the 80's and 90's), we experienced the so-called 'Non-ratings Period'. This referred to the time proceeding and following Christmas when network television effectively closed down, and reverted to shabby programming. It is still in existence today, yet unnoticed by those who now have Cable. The idea behind this 'non-ratings' stretch was that most people were doing things in December and January other than watching television - people were on holidays and their kids off school, hanging at the beach or catching the latest blockbuster at the air-conditioned local cinema. But in the hot Oz summer, sometimes slothing in front of the tube with a fan coursing humid air across your semi-naked body was the only sensible option...especially if you didn't live near a beach (or a cinema).

A PRAYER FOR THE DYING FORMATS,

& those who shall covet them... (by Decoy Spoon)

November '08 Article

"The more things change, the more they stay the same" - Alphonse Karr
"You've got to fight for your right to party" - Beastie Boys

As our culture accelerates towards its inevitable cyber Zenith (or Nadir, as the case may be), we are seeing trends appear that have sociologists and futurists debating the pros and cons of our 21st Century high-speed living, and how it relates to our shifting understanding of ourselves and our place in the universe. Understandably, serious questions are being raised.

DARKROOM INTRIGUE

(by Amanda Vare)

October '08 Article

I had my first taste of the allure of the darkroom when I was a wide-eyed teen in high school, terrified of my enlisted work experience with the local newspaper. I was there to learn about photo journalism, but what I took away from it was not affirmation of a career choice, but rather a heightened interest in that photographic darkroom...

Time passed and I kept taking photos...

Then when the opportunity arose to study photography at University and therefore have access to both the black & white and colour darkroom, this girl lined up early and eagerly on enrolment day to ensure my name was included on the class list! And it was!

Excitement grew...
Darkroom access had been granted.

A BARBARIAN'S TALE

(by Decoy Spoon)

September '08 Article

You know...
I don't usually go in for mercenaries...
The Barbarian's life is usually a lonely one, and I'm fine with that...
We make this career choice consciously...
I have no illusions...
However, I do find that I'm a classic horder of gold and goodies...
Even after my cut-off point of 150,000 gold at a mere level 20...
I often find I'm walking around lugging another 190,000-odd on me, in my bulging pockets...
(The chronic pain of RSI and aggravated back problems is quite well known throughout the Barbarian community...
And there's no Occupational Health & Safety regulations for our line of work...
We're on our own in this regard too...
We put up with a lot...)
So occasionally - it's been known to happen - I'll hire a mercenary or two, or three, just to help out with the work load...
I'm always lookin' for dudes (or dudettes) wielding some kinda Cold Damage (in order to freeze 'em, so I can smash 'em...
that old chestnut...
the oldest trick in the book...)

SEX, DRUGS and NOSTALGIA:

Another Gen-Xer (proudly) shows his age... (by Decoy Spoon)

August '08 Article

There is a scene in the Seinfeld episode "The Foundation" where Jerry mentions a line from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan concerning the death of Spock; to which George responds: "It was a hell of a thing when Spock died." Jerry replies: "Yeah..." This is followed by a funny silence where both men are miles away; lost in thought; instantly whisked back to that emotional Trekkie moment; before breaking out of it and gathering themselves. It's one of my favourite Seinfeld moments. It speaks to that unique strain of Fandom that runs deep and dissolves time and transports you; and whether you're a Star Trek fan or not, you understand what the guys are talking about. (And if you are a Star Trek fan, then you understand further that it was a hell of a thing when Spock died. In fact, you probably sat there for a few seconds looking a bit like Jerry and George; seeing Spock's radiated Vulcan hand on the glass of your mind's eye. Poor Spock. But, alas, the needs of the many...yada yada yada.)

DEALING WITH THE DEAD:

ZOMBIE BASICS FOR THE APPROACHING APOCALYPSE (by Adam Fay)

June '08 Article

They show no mercy. They have no remorse. They don't discriminate and they love nothing more than to eat you alive. I'm talking about flesh-eating, scum-sucking Zombies. They are the undead, living corpses, walking stiffs. I have bad news for anyone who thinks they are safe in this world. If we don't start paying attention to the warning signs, zombies may one day rise and take over the earth.

Raiders Of A Lost Art

(by Wadrick Jones)

May '08 Article

I can still recall the first time I saw Raiders Of The Lost Ark. I can remember waiting in the cinema foyer, an art deco joint in a small town at the foot of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney. I was perhaps seven or eight years of age, and the clearest memory of that evening is standing beside my parents staring at the adult patrons assembled in anticipation of what was to come. To a child, the anticipation was palpable, and I could feel my own heart beating in excitement. I had seen the advertisements on the TV and I knew then and there that this would be the greatest night of my short life.
