The brown bear (known as the grizzly in the Lower 48 states) is a large predator distinguished from black bears by a distinctive hump on the shoulders, a dished profile to the face, and long claws about the length of a human finger.

Coloration is usually darkish brown but can vary from very light cream to black. The long guard hairs on their back and shoulders often have white tips and give the bears a "grizzled" appearance, hence the name "grizzly."

Grizzlies

Sometimes people would call them brownies.

Grizzlies live mostly in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Washington and Canada. The grizzly bear can get up to 1,800 pounds. That is about the weight of a big bull. The grizzly is able to stand on its hind feet. When he stands up he can be as tall as 12 feet high.

Among Grizzlies: Living with Wild Bears in Alaska

From Booklist
This firsthand account of living among grizzly bears in a place Treadwell calls the Grizzly Sanctuary, just south of the Arctic Circle, reveals intimate details of the summer lives of these great bears. Fleeing a life of drug and alcohol addiction, Treadwell made an initial foray to Alaska to an area known for salmon fishing and encountered bears also attracted to the run of fish. Feeling a kinship with the bears he met, he returned to Alaska in subsequent summers to live among the bears and observe them close at hand. His interactions with the lives of bears, such as those he named Mr. Chocolate and Hulk, taught him their body language, and his ability to mimic their behavioral gestures probably saved his life several times. Full of anecdotal stories about the details of the daily routine of grizzly life, this story of salvation through grizzly bears will help engender concern for their future in the wild. Nancy Bent

Grizzly Man

In his mesmerizing new film, GRIZZLY MAN, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell's remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the pa

Bears have been known to live and reproduce at 25 years of age, with a potential life span of up to 35 years.

Brown bears may excavate shallow depressions in which to lay, commonly referred to as day beds.

Ursus arctos begins hibernation in November - December, and resumes activity in March - April, with the exact period dependent on the location, weather, and condition of the individual.

The brown bear has been long considered the most dangerous animal in North America, although real danger of attack is often exaggerated. In general, brown bears attempt to avoid human contact and will not attack unless startled at close quarters with young or engrossed in a search for food. However, they are very unpredictable in temperament, and often exhibit impulsive and petulant behavior.
