The Power of Air

Since the early to mid 1970's or so, great strides have been made in the tool industry. When a new house was going up in the neighborhood we were accustomed to hearing the sound of hammers driving nails home. Today, quite often, there are new sounds; the dull thud of the pneumatic (air operated) nail gun and the hum of air compressors. With invention and innovation came progress. The new types of tools make the job easier and save so much time and money on labor that the cost of many of these tools can be recovered in just one job!

Grizzly tools

An overview of some of their air operated (pneumatic) power tools as well as a few from other manufacturers.

Photo credit from royalty free google images by dreamstimeThe leaders, old stand-bys and familiar names among tool companies; Milwaukee, Craftsman, Skil, DeWalt (to name a few) were joined in 1983, by Grizzly IndustrialĀ®, Inc. Grizzly has grown into one of the largest machinery companies in the United States. Their products can be found in all sizes of shops from large industrial production users to the smaller cabinet and machine shops, construction sites and at home for the backyard handyman.

Grizzly tools are durable, affordable and guaranteed. Something that I look for in any tool that I am buying. Their distinctive "sea green" color causes them to stand out from the crowd. Also they have the widest product selection under one brand name, in the world. Plus Grizzly also sells other brand name tools as well as their own.

The Framing Nailer

The framing nailer is the "big gun" in the building trades. It saves time and alot of energy. It is used from foundation to roof and helps construction crews work more efficiently than ever before. Without exaggeration, a skilled and nimble carpenter with a framing nailer can nail four nails home while another equally skilled worker is just getting a regular nail out of his nail pouch.

Not only is it used on the framing lumber, it is used even more as a plywood nailer. We get all of our plywood down on the floor of a new home and get it "tacked" in place, snap chalk lines to mark the floor joists...and then fly! My nephew, Mike, starts at one end of the house and doesn't stop until he runs out of nails. The entire floor nailed down by one man, while the rest of us start on the walls. I'm a fan!

Please Note:

Most tool companies make nailers that use either round head or clipped head nails. I have only included info on the round head type. The reason for this is that throughout the country, many local building codes do not allow the clipped head nails. Round head nails are accepted nationwide.

Floor Nailer

Photo credit AmazonThis tool is used for tongue and groove hardwood flooring. I have installed small portions of flooring nailing it by hand with a hammer and nail. You drive the nail in only part way and then use a nail set to drive it home and try not to damage the edge of the flooring. With this tool, you get it positioned into the groove on the flooring, then give the head of the nailer a wack and your nail is driven home. Your floor isn't damaged and you have a nice tight fit.

Always follow the manufacturer's guidelines for your pneumatic tools. Many require oiling on a regular basis and still others require oilers attached directly to the air compressor. Read your owner's manual and take it to heart. You will have years of use from your tools if you take care of them properly.

The Crown Stapler

The Extra Man

Photo credit AmazonThe Crown Stapler is one of the biggest time and money savers I have ever owned. After using it on its very first job it became fondly known by my workers as "The Extra Man".

Before getting this tool we had to nail 1/4" underlayment with 4d (4 penny) underlayment nails. In order to stay within warranty guidelines for vinyl flooring companies and prevent floor squeaks, we had to nail the underlayment every four inches. That is 288 nails for each 4'x8' sheet. No matter how fast you could go, it still took a lot of man hours. But now with the crown stapler, using the same amount of staples per sheet, we can knock it out in no time at all. That little stapler has more than paid for itself.

I have used it in many different applications, from making flexible borders for our flower beds to building props for church Christmas plays. A nice tool to have in your shop!

Coil Roof Nailer

The Coil Roof Nailer is another great tool. You can nail shingles on faster than ever before. The first time I used one was many years ago. Another builder loaned me his to see what I thought of it. It so happened that I had a small roof to do (approximately 12 squares/1200 square feet).

On this particular Saturday, I had my 9 year old nephew with me for the day. I had him hand me the shingles and I used this "new tool" to nail them in place. It worked so well that I was able to finish the whole roof in six hours with a 9 year old for a helper.

The coil of nails is easy to load and smooth operating. I suggest that as with any tool, you wear safety glasses. Most of the nailers featured here use nails that are held together with wire. As the nail fires, the wire breaks. It has to go somewhere, so make sure that it doesn't wind up in your eye. Wear safety glasses!

Finish Nailers/Brad Nailers

photo credit by AmazonA nice tool for doing finish and trim work. Air pressure even countersinks the head so no "setting" of the nail is necessary. It is also handy for those who like to do craft work and small projects in their shop.

For fine/delicate work, this is the tool. Very low impact so it won't jar your work apart.

This would be a great addition to your shop tool collection.

Air Compressors

The Power Source

photo credit by AmazonAll of the tools that I have shown you so far, are nothing more than paperweights without an air compressor to power them. Compressors come in all shapes and sizes. I have had my present 4 HP 25 gallon air compressor for almost twenty years. It has done everything I have needed it to, but it is a bit cumbersome and loud.

My next compressor is going to be one of those displayed below. I'm partial to the ones many call pancake compressors (because of their shape).
They are suitable for using indoors, most have rubber feet to prevent them from sliding around on a bare floor.

The best thing is that if you get one that is sized right for the work you are doing, you can run more than one nailer at a time.

After every time you use your air compressor, bleed it down. Moisture builds up and should be drained out of the bottom bleed valve on the tank. This will protect your tank from rusting from the inside out. It takes two minutes and can be bleeding off while you coil up your extension cord.

I have been doing this with mine for almost 20 years...still no rust or leaks!
