Grocery Shopping List -- What Does Yours Reveal About You?

I think grocery lists are incredibly personal pieces of literature. A grocery list contains all the day-to-day items in a person's life - very revealing!

Even the type of shopping list says something about its owner. You can choose from the venerable blank grocery shopping list, decide on a customized printable grocery list, use an aisle-by-aisle shopping list, or only put broad categories on your grocery list, such as "cereal".

Are you frugal?

  • Does your grocery list steer you to brand names or generic products? Does it tell you exactly what you need to buy to prepare this week's meals?
  • Is everything you'll need for the week written on the list so you won't have to make any extra (and costly) grocery store stops during the week?
  • Being organized is a way of being frugal with your time. Whether you use free printable grocery shopping lists or a house cleaning checklist being efficient maximizes the use of your day.

Are you a free spirit?

Does your grocery shopping list reflect the actual meals you are going to prepare this week or does it list what simply sounded yummy as you dashed out the door?

Do you wait and see what your grocery store has displayed for you? The samples they offer you to taste? Shopping this way is a lot of fun and a lot more expensive.

You can still use your grocery shopping list and enjoy your food shopping experience. When you a featured food at your store you'd like to try, ask yourself how it can fit into your menu and then look for generic alternatives, which are usually just as tasty at less cost.

Do you prize convenience over value?

In a grocery store, you can choose from different types of value. There is time-value, which is represented by the convenience foods. Of course, what the grocery store doesn't tell you is that you can make your own convenience foods for much less than the store's going prices.

There is also nutrition value. Often convenience foods sacrifice nutrition. Even so-called healthy convenience foods are simply compared against other types of convenience foods, not against cooking nutritionally sound foods from scratch.

I love calling a grocery list a personal piece of literature. I don't want mine published, either, which is why I guard it carefully. Interesting insight. Love it!

My favorite "comfort food" is macaroni and cheese. Sometimes, when alone, my entire evening meal will be macaroni and cheese. This is an interesting perspective of how we use our grocery shopping lists and what they say about us. Your Amazon "Grocery Yummies" section is returning no products. You might want to try something different there. I have joined your fan club and look forward to more great lenses and blog posts! 5*

I can't shop without a list. If I do, I forget half of what I meant to buy!

Do you use food for comfort or rewards?

Your grocery list doesn't lie. If sugar and fat bring you emotional comfort, your list will reflect that.

I think this is a good thing!

Why? Because you can't change something you don't know about. Besides, we ALL use food as comfort sometimes. The real questions are; how often and what types of food are you using for comfort?

Chicken soup, mashed potatoes and gravy and pizza are all wonderful comfort foods. They can each be quite healthy if fixed with appropriate ingredients and they will still bring you all the warm fuzzies you desire.

What are YOUR warm fuzzies when it comes to food? Share your thoughts in the Guestbook section.
