Is Grocery Shopping Online Worth It?

Isn't it lazy to go grocery shopping online?

There are good reasons to go grocery shopping online (and its not being lazy!). Grocery shopping takes time. You have to

grocery delivery is better than grocery shopping
  • Go to the store.

  • Waste time shopping

  • Load up your car

  • Go home

  • Unload your shopping

  • Bring everything into your home

  • Put all of your groceries away.

Think about all the time spent in check-out lines. Sometimes it takes forever to find what you're looking for, whether they've moved things, you're looking for a specialty item, or you're shopping at a new grocery store. In big cities, parking is a problem. If you have a big family with several children, going to the grocery store is a dreaded ritual. Most people are BUSY anymore. Late nights at work make it difficult to find time to cook, let alone do the shopping. People with disabilities or who are unable to drive have a difficult to impossible time with grocery shopping. Ordering your groceries online and having them delivered to your home changes all of that!

Is it environmentally friendly to have your groceries delivered?

Doesn't home grocery delivery add to your carbon footprint?

green grocery shopping

An online grocery delivery service is a carpool for your grocery shopping! The delivery van is laden with groceries at the store and follows a logical route, dropping off groceries at different customer's homes along the way. Surely this is more fuel-efficient than 10 customers individually driving their cars to the store and back home again!

My verdict - online grocery shopping with home delivery IS the greener option!

NOTE - Most online grocery companies have added a 'fuel surcharge' to their cost of home delivery. This is tied to the US Dept. of Energy's retail price of gasoline. The surcharge is triggered when gasoline rises above $2.75 per gallon (remember when it was less than that?).

Reviews of Online Grocery Shopping Services

Whats the verdict?

We've found a few thoughtful reviews published online about the online grocery shopping experience, as well as using the in-store pickup option available at some grocers. Read about their experiences and what they had to say.
Albertsons
Read a review of Albertson's online grocery shopping from one of their "in-store pickup" customers in Washington State. She doesn't use the delivery option as its not available yet in her area, but has good information on the actual online ordering process as well as the in-store pickup option. Find some additional insider tips too!

What is the best advantage to grocery shopping online?

For those who have shopped for groceries online, what did you like the best?

If you've tried out online grocery shopping, what aspect of the experience did you enjoy the most? Did you like avoiding the crowded aisles at the grocery store, the crowded parking lot and the LONG lines (where you inevitably get behind someone needing multiple price checks, or a difficult payment)? Did you find it easier to stick to your list and your budget? Did you enjoy having one less errand to run?

What didn't you like about online grocery shopping?

It can't all be perfect, can it?

Some people take their grocery shopping very seriously. They like to hand-pick fresh vegetables and fruit, finding ones that are exactly the level of ripeness that they want. A trip to the grocery store can remind you of something that you haven't had in a while but would love to try again. If your preferred brand-size-flavor, etc.. is out of stock, the substitution is up to you. Maybe you don't miss anything about personally visiting your grocery store, but had a hard time scheduling your delivery. That, or you don't feel comfortable with the 'unattended delivery' option. Maybe your online delivery service does not allow you to use manufacturer's coupons. OR, maybe you just feel the convenience is not worth the added expense.

Philosophy Free Shipping CouponWhether or not you will use a service again is really the most important indicator of how useful that service was. So - what did you think? I do most of my shopping online, not just groceries. It's convenient because I don't drive and it's a time saver because I don't waste time getting to the store, hunting for what I want and then getting home again. I never thought of it before, but I guess it is an eco-friendly way to shop. Thanks for pointing that out.
