Recent Survey: More Consumers Turn to Coupons

More people are using coupons despite feeling self-conscious about it, according to a new survey.

More than one in five (22%) U.S. consumers admit they are self-conscious about redeeming coupons at the grocery store, according to research by marketing firm ICOM Information & Communications.

However, 57% of respondents who admitted they were self-conscious about redeeming coupons at the grocery store in the past said that they no longer care as long as they are saving money.

Apprehension tied to using coupons in the checkout line is also waning in key demographic segments.

Of consumers 35 years old and younger, 26% said that they have reduced inhibitions about coupon usage in the past six months.

Nearly 20% in this demographic said they used to be self-conscious but are no longer because of the economic benefit and 6% said that they are less self-conscious.

Almost 23% of respondents who have suffered a direct financial loss have become less self-conscious about redeeming coupons at the register.

"In a down economy even the most stubborn consumers are receptive to money saving offers," said Mark Hertenstein, ICOM vice president of sales, in a statement.

"This is a perfect time for brands to engage desirable consumer segments with offers that appeal to their frugal mindset."

Commissioned by retail analytics firm Precima, the survey was sent to 45,000 U.S. households with 3,013 responding nationwide.

Also, 43% of shoppers say that they've used more coupons in the past six months. This data comes as a followup to ICOM's April 2008 survey that asked consumers if they were likely to use more or fewer coupons in the event of economic downturn.

According to that survey, 67% of consumers planned more coupon use in a recession.

This product has a hidden savings in the fact that it will save on replacing the item stained. How many times have you thrown out a stained shirt or pair of pants because you couldn't get the stain out? You can't even sell it on eBay or in a garage sale. The item ends up in a landfill before it's time. Now how "green" is that?

Start Now to Become What I Call a Mini-Consumer

Costs of Goods Has Risen Beyond Our Budget!

Cost of Groceries Has Jumped!

We are a nation of Buy, Buy, Buy!

Times have changed and we all need a new mindset!
My goal for my household is to maintain our status quo in our lives. This is the 21st Century and I feel like we are headed for the days of the major depression in the 30's that my parents endured.

Chilling Update from a good source: Washington has made plans for a "Depression" in our now existing economy. Banks failing, GM on the verge of going under, 401K's going south in value, etc., etc.

Who of us need designer anything? Really?
What is wrong with the basics in life?
Why do we need to spend $50.00 to $80.00 on one piece of clothes that has someone's name boldly fashioned across it?

People have become walking billboards for these companies next several sales!

......so the BIG Question to ask yourself with your family in order to endure these financially distressing times is....

Can You Become a MINI-CONSUMER???

That will be the Most Important Question You Need to Ask Yourself in Earnest - Honestly!

A USA Today article stated this to reinforce what I have stated here about being a Mini-Consumer.

"If you are looking forward to a comfortable retirement, or to ease the strain of a tough economy, simplicity is the formula.

My all-time favorite nonfiction book is The Millionaire Next Door, by Thomas Stanley and William Danko. According to the book, most millionaires reach their financial status because of their simple lifestyle. Most are first-generation entrepreneurs, with plumbing, extermination, repair companies or other such small-service businesses. The book points out, interestingly, that huge incomes don't create millionaires. Most of the self-made millionaires earned $60,000 to $100,000 a year.

The trick is simply to spend less and save and invest more.

'Self-discipline is the key to a simple life. Start by trading material trappings for more freedom and less financial stress. Take a look at some of the little things that you choose to buy and ask yourself before the purchase if you really need it.'"

Companies are NOT giving pay raises to keep up with the basic cost of inflation. And with the escalating price of fuel for trucking goods,
ALL of us and our home budgets are loosing ground financially.

Update: My wife is now buying our groceries at Food City Grocery Stores. They have this "Food Bucks for Gas promotion. On our recent trip she hands me thirteen Bucks promotion coupons.
Saved $13.00 on a fill-up! Wow! Wonderful way to save money and you can too!

Buy the Sunday Paper, ......Some are Buying Two! Double Coupons

Cut out every coupon there is in the paper.

Start a three month evaluation of using coupons to go toward gas purchases.

Get the whole family involved!

Reward with a special family night or weekend for cutting out and using coupons

Maintain a progress log to see where to improve

Make it fun

If You Don't Need It, - Don't Buy It!!!

What do we first need? Really Need? FOOD

Start buying specials in Bulk.

Put extra perishable items in a freezer. Don't have one, seriously consider getting one. There are great buys on used freezers. But with the economy the way it is these may become scarce.
Back to the Sunday paper, look for sale specials on basic upright or chest freezers. No need to buy the super duper deluxe model, stick with something small to store a month or two of items.

Can goods are another opportunity to save when they offer specials. Start storing away in a pantry. No pantry, then how about the end of a closet. Or perhaps, in a plastic container that can slide under a bed. I know there are areas in a home that with a little ingenuity, can be just the spot.

What's the benefit you may ask?

Less trips to the store. Less trips means more gas savings, less wear and tear on the car, and You!

When you buy in bulk, you get better unit pricing.
Be a smart shopper and enjoy the extra savings
.....and extra time with your family and friends at home.

Basic Facts:
Eighty-nine percent of people report using coupons when shopping for grocery, household and health-care items at supermarkets, according to a recent Promotion Marketing Association survey.

And 97% of primary shoppers report using coupons at supermarkets.
On the average, that helps them save a cool 7% on their grocery bill.
Think about this, when was the last time you received a 7% raise in pay?
I know the answer, but YOU can give yourself this raise using coupons!
Start today to make this a habit in your family lives. Just Do It.

Coupons

In marketing a coupon is a ticket or document that can be exchanged for a financial discount or rebate when purchasing a product. Customarily, coupons are issued by manufacturers of consumer packaged goods or by retailers, to be used in retail stores as a part of sales promotions. They are often widely distributed through mail, magazines, newspapers, the Internet, and mobile devices such as cell phones. Internet coupons have become popular recently, because there is no postal cost, and the printing cost is borne by the user (who prints the coupons) rather than the businesses issuing them. Mobile coupons have emerged as a new and green alternative as no printing is required whatsoever. Mobile coupons as a method of coupon redemption are gaining in popularity as more consumers utilize their mobile devices for uses beyond voice.

great lens about an increasingly important topic-saving money. I used my coupon savings one year to pay for a family vacation to Hawaii by putting all the savings in a jar. That opened my husband's formerly skeptical eyes. LOL. 5*
