Groom's Cake A Rich And Colorful History
Throughout history, the main wedding cake has often been call the the Bride's Cake. Some think that the Groom's Cake is a relatively new tradition originating in the South. It is a southern tradition, but it was originated in the 17th century, so the Groom's Cake is really a very old wedding tradition somehow lost now rediscovered.
In the great southern tradition, the theme for the Groom's Cake is a surprise for the groom chosen by the bride. Think back to the scene in "Steel Magnolias" where all the women are having a discussion about a red and gray cake in the shape of an armadillo. That armadillo was the groom's cake Shelby was planning to give her husband to be.
The Original Tradition
Beginning as a Southern tradition, and then spreading throughout the states, the groom's cake was meant to be carried home by guests. For this reason, it was made with durable ingredients such as fruit. Yes, all grooms cakes were once fruitcakes!
Typically the cake was sliced and boxed and then given to the unmarried females to take home. They would then place the cake slice under their pillow in hopes that the man they were dreaming of would one day be their husband.
Guess what? You don't have to follow tradition anymore! It is safe to say that your woman guests will most likely forgo sleeping with a piece of your groom's cake!

What It Means Today!
Ok, Ok, enough of that! Take a look at what the Groom's Cake means today. Still typically chocolate or fruit (you know the manly cake flavors and colors), the Groom's Cake has come to mean fashion, romance and style.

What Exactly Is A Groom's Cake?
A groom's cake is typically smaller than the couple's wedding cake, one layer only, and is decorated to reflect a particular hobby or interests of the groom. A hockey fan's groom's cake may be made in the shape and color of a hockey puck. The groom who enjoys shooting hoops could have a groom's cake resembling a basketball. If the groom likes to strum a few tunes from time to time, then a guitar groom's cake is perfect.

Themes For A Grooms Cake
Themes often chosen for groom's cakes include hobbies, sports, sports teams, colleges or universities, and computers. But, because every groom is different, anything can be used as inspiration to make your groom's cake personal and unique.
Today, groom's cakes come in all shapes and sizes. So, how do you decide on your groom's cake? Basically any kind of cake will do, there are no rules. It is best, however, to have it made in your groom's favorite flavor, like chocolate, vanilla, fruit whatever you know he loves. As denoted by the name "Groom's" cake it is a flavor or shape that the groom desires. You and your groom can stretch your creative minds when choosing your groom's cake. You should have fun with it!
Whatever theme you choose for the groom's cake, it is a charming tradition that adds a distinctive, personal touch to your wedding festivities while honoring the man you just married.

Where To Find A Groom's Cake
A cake is a cake, so the simplest route to having a groom's cake made is to consult with the same baker who is making your wedding cake. As long as the baker is open to unique and original designs, you can request anything you like. Perhaps your baker has a catalogue you can browse through of groom's cake themes. Sometimes bakers will offer a package deal for the two cakes, so be sure to ask about this.
I would make sure to do some research before talking to the baker though. Just was with the wedding cake, you are going to want to know ahead of time what kind of look you want for the groom's cake. You can search all of the same places that you will for the wedding cake; online, wedding magazines, wedding books, and bridal shows just to name a few. If you find something you like always remember to take pictures with you when talking to the baker. This will make things easier on everyone.

When Should You Serve The Groom's Cake?
As mentioned, tradition dictates that the groom's cake is handed out to guest as favors when they leave the reception. But, in these days, you can serve the groom's cake whenever you see fit. Some couples like to share it with their wedding party at the rehearsal dinner. Some offer it to the bridesmaids after the reception to enjoy with drinks. Some like to keep it handy just in case there is not enough of the wedding cake to go around. Perhaps the most romantic things is to take the groom's cake with you after the reception and enjoy it the next day as a "sweet" start to your life together.
Keep in mind though that if you desire to present the Groom's cake at the wedding reception DO NOT let it distract from the Wedding Cake. It should set off to the side, perhaps or among the other desserts, but never on the same level as your Wedding Cake.

Should You Have A Groom's Cake?
Good question, with the answer being, if you want to. While groom's cakes are a tradition in the south, elsewhere it is really a matter of preference. There is no rule, but if you want to add a sentimental touch to your wedding day, then honor your groom with his own cake. It is a sweet gesture that will give your guests something extra to talk about.
