You Won't Believe Some of the GrossThings That go into Processed Foods
Little known facts that make one want to cringe and run to their nearest health food store or even grow them by hand. Ingredients for processed foods are starting to share the spotlight in unpalatable ways and oftentimes with a grimace.
I think we can all agree that there's bad food for you out there but these ingredients really are up there in the gross food categories. Would I go so far as to say they're harmful ingredients? Yes, some are and ALL are unappealing and it does give one pause as to what your putting into your mouth!

Dead Bugs for Red Food Coloring
Called Cochineal Insects
Frequently listed in ingredients as Carmine or Carminic Acid....because there was an outcry of using powdered bugs as colorants some manufactures have also listed this as a "natural coloring". These insects are from South and Central America.Specifically the female Dactylopius Coccus which is dried or boiled and crushed into a fine powder. Synthetic pigments abound in today's market but Carmine is still widely used in foods, drinks, fabrics and cosmetics. Can also be listed as Crimson Lake, Cochineal, Natural Red #40, C.I. 75470, or E120
Human Hair and or Duck Feathers in Bread
Labeled Under L-Cysteine or Cystine
Mostly used as a dough conditioner. The majority of L-Cysteine was once obtained industrially by hydrolysis of human hair, but in recent years 80% is produced from duck feathers instead. It's now possible to get synthetically produced material, usually for Kosher at a higher price

Coal Tar in Red Colored Candy
Allura Red AC
Derived from coal tar found in red colored candies, sweets and sodas it's sometimes confused with Carmine. Allura Red AC also known as FD&C Red 40 was originally manufactured from coal tar, but is now mostly made from petroleum I feel so much better now don't you? Cheese From a Calf Stomach
Using the Stomach of a Young Cow Which is called Rennet,
Not widely practiced in the Americas today. Still, they insert cow genes into certain types of bacteria to produce an organism (Chymosin) which was sanctioned by the US Food and Drug Administration, in 1999.60% of hard chess was made with the genetic Chymosin. In 2008, 80 to 90% of cheeses were made this way and still are.
Gelatin is an Animal By-Product
Made from Bones and Hides of Animals
Mainly from pork skins, pork and cattle bones, or split cattle hides. They boil bones and skin along with hides which releases collagen
Against popular belief gelatin is NOT made from hooves. This boiled down gelatin is also found in some gummie candies, marshmallows, gelatin desserts and some low fat yogurts. Vegans Beware

I Just Found Something Else
I find I've been reading labels more now days, which leads me to my salad dressing. Nothing gross however I wanted everyone to be aware that something as simple as salad dressing can contain some interesting things. Mostly the information I just dug up pertains to vegans, however anyone allergic to fish also needs to be aware.Listed under Disodium guanylate, it's a flavor enhancer and additive. Commonly used in conjunction with MSG, if MSG isn't present this additive usually has soy added. Disodium guanylate is produced from dried fish or seaweed and should be avoided by asthmatics and people with gout, This additive also isn't safe for very young babies.
If Disodium guanylate is made from seaweed the product will be labeled as being vegan friendly.
The FDA Allows Bugs and Rodent Hair
In Peanut Butter
This is actually 100% true. IF one were to go to the FDA website you will see quite a few things that they allow in or on foods. Please keep in mind though as mandated by the FDA there is a maximum to yuckies allowed. Eggs, excrement, hair and even mold.
Also while most of us would look at this list and think say in terms of a whole larvae egg this is simply not the case. They deal in so many "eggs" per say 100 grams of product or in some cases per pound so it's not like your favorite Pineapples are swimming in gross stuff.

Here's a few others from the FDA site:
8 - Ground Cinnamon - insect and rodent hairs9 - Chocolate and Chocolate Liquor - insect parts and rodent filth
10 - Cranberry Sauce - mold
11 - Canned Greens - Mildew
12 - Canned Pineapples - Mold
13 - Macaroni and Noodle Products - Insect filth and rodent hairs
14 - Popcorn - Rodent filth
15 - Tomato Juice - Drosophila fly eggs and larvae

I also want to clear up a few Myth's I've found
Worcestershire sauce is made from dissolved fish, this is not the case. The ONLY fish ingredient in Worcestershire Sauce that's made in the US, is anchovies.
Twinkies made with Animal Fat - I know that the creme filling is made with VEGETABLE shortening, however since the company has never listed it's ingredients for those yummy spongy cakes your guess is as good as mine!
Organic Snacks
Not hungry anymore?
Of course you are, everyone has to eat!
If you think about this philosophically, it's nothing that we haven't eaten every day of our lives. I for one am not going to stop eating jello because it's made from boiled cow or pig fat, where do you think homemade gravy (NOT in a package) comes from? Am I suggesting you limit yourself to all those wonderful foods out there? No, however putting down the packaged meat is simple and easy.
For example instead of packaged or deli ham and chicken, you could buy that same meat from the meat department and cook them up yourself. Both of these can be sliced nicely AND frozen for when you need more. They also wouldn't contain the "helpful" bacteria. I only ask that you be vigilant as to what labels mean!

- This reminds me of the movie Matrix, when that guy is eating a steak and says that he knew it didn't exist. "Ignorance is a bliss" he added while making a deal with the bad guy. Should ignorance be a bliss regarding what we eat? How about the old saying that "what don't kill us makes us strong"? The only thing I say is that the more I know, the more stressed I get because my food choices are diminishing every month, perhaps weekly. Most of us do not have the resources to shop Whole Food every week. Any thoughts?

- Yup, ignorance is certainly bliss, which reminds me. I actually bought some organic yogurt the other day (which shall remain un-named). One was blueberry which contained elderberries for coloring (elderberries are very good for your immune system) and the other was strawberry which I'll admit I was half way through eating before I looked at the ingredients...the coloring was Carmine! If you'll remember Carmine is crushed and powdered bugs...LOL I freely admit I had a moment of ew, ew, ew before I continued eating!
Now for you and not being able to shop natural on a regular basis, what about a little garden? I know a garden isn't going to give you cereal or drinks but even a little good is good right? If you don't have room for a garden think smaller scale by a table top or sunny window for some fresh veggies. If you really want to go big though, there are plenty of places online that for cost will mail all the natural goodies you want right to your door.
I had a point with the Carmine in my yogurt though, this is organic, 100% natural and still it had bugs (powdered of course) in it. Even natural and organic foods can have unwanted ingredients, it's up to you to decide if the good outweighs the unwanted elements. For me I loved the taste and have several more in my fridge waiting for me, in my case the good taste and the low carbs are good for me and that outweighs the negative Carmine in there.
Good Luck!

- Pretty gross! We have consciously been making choices to get away from processed foods, but we're not 100% there yet. This might just push the process along faster! (No pun intended) Thanks for this very educational lens!

- I'll admit I really never gave eating better much thought until I did the research for this one and we've gotten better. Less processed foods is good! I think what upsets me the most is the corn in a can...I love corn! But now I can't stomach the idea of larvae in there, it just turns my stomach...ew.
