From Poop to Recycled Condoms: The Top 5 weird and gross recycled products

Ranked #413 in Green, #45,432 overall

Wiping your face with elephant poo? Styling your hair with recycled condoms? You've never looked better!

Here at GreenBeans headquarters, recycling is a way of life! We spend our days focused on transforming the ugly and discarded into beautiful function. From high quality OEM batteries, to cell phones and accessories, we scrub, rub, tinker and test all that is old until it is new again.

In a day we can process 1,000 electronics; we have seen our fair share of gross. From dog slobber to suspicious smelling "water damage" we are glad to have our gloves, masks and lab coats for protection when disinfecting.

It seems that we have many friends in the world, fellow sorters of gook and gunk and byproducts of human and non. And although we admire their solidarity in sludge, some of us can't help but wonder: How far can we go?

Here's a countdown of the nominees for the Top 5 weird and gross recycled stuff, courtesy of your friends at GreenBeans Rewards!

HEY THERE GORGEOUS!

So proud to be NOMINATED FOR FRESH SQUID OF THE MONTH!

< AND BE SURE TO CHECK OUT SOME OTHER FANTASTIC FRESH SQUID

Sit on this! Our picks for numbers #5 and #4 go to these clever, if not a bit yucky, recycled furniture concepts

Does your sofa reak? Maybe it's time to change the bottles in your armrest, or the laundry in your ottoman...

Inquiring minds want to know, how far do YOU go?

Do you recycle everything from soup to poop OR are you just fine wth sorting your standard recyclables?

Hardcore vs Curbside pickup: Where do you stand?

I'm hardcore! Here's what I do to stay a lean green recycling machine:

Margo_Arrowsmith says:

I would recycle everything I could. I separate hair (even the dogs) to make sure it goes to compost

Beautiful_GreenBeans says:

I heard a rumor that the Easter Bunny is bringing the Bill Nye Paper Recycling Kit for the kids!

Mortira says:

I save just about everything that I think I can reuse later. Sometimes I end up letting it go into the blue-bin when my cupboards get crowded, but I prefer to find creative ways to Reuse what I can't Reduce.
But I don't wash aluminum foil. I rinse it, fold it, and put it in with the soup cans.

I love our planet, but it's enough sorting my paper, plastic and metal. Here's what I do to keep it Green:

alteredkat says:

I fill my bins but that's about it...so, I'm def. not hardcore but I do help out. :o)

OurIslamic says:

I do as much as I can, but in the area I live in, there isn't a way to do hardcore recyling.

Beautiful_GreenBeans says:

Recycling aluminum foil is pretty easy, and it saves some pretty copper!

Kerridwen says:

I'm really not as green as I should be, but I guess I'm on the way . . .My toddler inspires me to reuse in some creative ways. After receiving orders from amazon or somewhere, we fill the boxes with old paper (we've used both sides of), tape them securely, decorate them (scribble on them) and then they become climbing equipment. A whole lot cheaper than those extra big blocks for kids and just as fun.

Graceonline says:

We recycle everything our municipality will take, which is a lot. Lucky us, the city sorts it all after collection. We reuse whatever we can, but our apartment is small, so we don't have much storage room to save things against the day they might be needed. Best practice is to buy in bulk and cut down on packaging. We're still working on that one. I'd say we're maybe ten percent there. Long way to go.

#5: Here's good excuse to play with silly putty...

The next time you catch somebody checking out your derriere, don't get mad, they're probably just trying to read their horoscope.

Designer Charles Kaisin took some regular old newspapers, then pressed and glued and formed them into a honeycomb, known to be the strongest of nature's structures. These benches are foldable so you can put them away, or lay them flat if Fido has an emergency!

We found it at http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/05/newspaper_exten.php

#4: Hole-y Fruit of the Loom's!

Scattered stinky socks everywhere and your parents are at the door? Not a problem with this "no air freshener included" clothing container ottoman!

We found it at http://weburbanist.com/2008/03/26/20-eye-catching-pieces-of-recycled-urban-furniture-geeky-and-ecological-reuse-of-ordinary-objects/

On the more practical side.....

Here's some random recycled furniture items from some folks on eBay

#3: Do I smell french fries?

The folks at Rice in NYC reuse their cooking oil to fuel their delivery van, and yes, you really can smell what the Rice is cooking.

Honorable mention...

Here's one we missed, but should be on the list:

#2: Is that...hair gel?

Recycled Condoms. Enough said.

Ewe. Ewe. Ewe. Ewe. First suspected to be a urban e-mail legend, this story has been reported as true by snopes.com

The story circulated informing the public that condoms were being recycled in southern China, threatening to spread STD's they were originally meant to prevent.

As explained on snopes.com, the condoms supplied for the hairbands were not actually used, but rather factory rejects. Perhaps the question is, who's checking?

Hey, look at the bright side, headbands are in!

And now, without further adoo, we present the #1 grossest of the gross: Never underestimate the Power of Poo!

Now you've got your sheep poo paper, and there's elephant poopoo products, cow poo pots are great for gardening, you can even buy reindeer poo...

It's true, they are really nice products and many of the companies that sell them belong to projects that protect the often endangered...ehem...poop donors. Well done!

Or maybe you just want to work with with you've got...

The folks that make poop products deserve a big round of applause for the crap they put up with, but this friends, is quite the example of dedication to the art of recycling poop. No ifs, ands, or butts. (Sorry)

Why flush when you can fertilize? That's what Joseph Jenkins proposes in his book, "The Humanure Handbook", and he has quite a following.

As Brian Liloia explains on Planetsave.com, "Well, instead of using a toilet, you might choose to use the bucket system, which is essentially a five gallon bucket..."

He goes on to describe the process, "After doing one's business, sawdust or straw is sprinkled on the bucket's contents to prevent odor, add carbon, and absorb liquids. (Believe me: it really does keep down odor.) Humanure can then be dumped into compost bins, where it decomposes and cures after one to two years. After this time, you are left with nothing but purely organic matter, something quite like dirt..."

It is truly a absorbing topic, and worth checking out at http://planetsave.com/blog/2008/10/15/dont-flush-that-poo-away-recycle-human-waste-with-the-humanure-system/

New Igo GREEN Tip of the Day

It's Tawooo! It's Tawooo!

JohannTheDog had her nose to the ground when she sniffed out this story! As promised, the Scoop on Dog Poop Power!

In San Francisco, getting poo on your shoe in the park was a real dilemma. That's when the city's waste management contractor, Norcal Waste...er...stepped in it.

Over 6,500 tons of dog poop is produced in the Bay area each year. Using dog waste collection carts, they gather, digest and convert the waste into methane gas. Did somebody say cow farts?

Jill Fehrenbacher explains it all at http://www.inhabitat.com/2007/06/19/dog-poop-power-for-san-francisco/

What you're about to see will shock and amaze you!
