Hiring a travel agency to take care of all your travel planning needs can take all the headaches and time consuming work out of it for you, but how do you really know the travel agency you want to hire is a reputable one? Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a travel agency for your upcoming vacation

Make sure they're associated with ASTA (American Society of Travel Agents) organization. This means that the traveling agency has strict rules and regulations they have to adhere to. It makes it easier for you to file a complaint against an agency in case you need to.

Be sure they don't over exaggerate their deals. Every travel agency would like to get your business, but some will try to get you the best deal and won't tell you everything you need to hear.

Make sure you have their contact information. If you go through an online travel agency, be sure they have their contact information clearly visible. There should be a phone number, address and an email address.

If all you're presented with is an email address, move on to another agency. A reputable agency will have no problem showing their contact information. It also doesn't hurt to try calling their phone number to talk to a live person and see if the number is for real.

Watch for hidden fees. Reputable agencies will lay out the deals exactly as they are. The ones that aren't legit tend to promise low rates and then charge you for extra fees once they've reeled you into their trap. Get every fee in writing.

Reputable agencies will go out of their way to make your trip as pleasant as possible. If you need handicap-accessible items, they'll go out of their way to make sure you're well taken care of. The ones that aren't good are only interested in getting your money and not your return business.

Reputable agencies are there for you even when you're on your trip and come across a problem. They work with you before, during and even after your trip to ensure everything goes smoothly. Bad ones tend to disappear after you've paid them for their services.

A reputable agency will offer some tips for your travel plans and let you know about a country's culture so you can play it safe while on your vacation. They're always on the lookout for any dangers that may occur in the country you want to visit and will alert you if there's a problem.

Some sell you their package and disappear after that, leaving you on your own. Travel agencies do all of the work for you so that all you have to worry about is having fun on your vacation.

Don't assume the airline will honor your flight booking and give you a refund in the event they file bankruptcy. It's not likely that will happen, since they're filing bankruptcy for a reason.

Travel insurance can be a huge help to you anytime you travel a long distance, abroad or with expensive items. Keep your traveling investment safe by purchasing some kind of travel insurance and avoid those unforeseen things that happen which end up costing more money in the end.

Traveling can be hard, but if you bring along some accessories, they can make things go a lot smoother for you. It may mean a few more things you have to pack, but it can be well worth the space and effort in the long run.

Tips for Traveling With Kids

Traveling can be a headache, especially when it's done with kids. Long plane rides or car rides can make any child restless, thereby making your trip miserable. It doesn't have to be. Here are some tips to use to try to make traveling with tots a bit better:

Tip #1 - Plan ahead. Last minute, spontaneous car rides don't work when there's children involved. Plan your route and plan for frequent stops, too. Children need to get out and run around at least once an hour to stretch out their legs. If your child isn't old enough to walk yet, get them out of the car seat for a little bit anyway.

Tip #2 - Prepare yourself. Children have smaller bladders than you do, so they need to go more often. They also tend to ask a lot of questions and noise is inevitable for them.

Don't act surprised when you have to answer a lot of questions and make more stops than you anticipated. Keep your sanity by preparing yourself for these things before the trip.

Tip#3 - For long trips in a car or plane, bring along some new toys for them to play with. Handheld video games are good time killers for the older children and some travel games are good for the younger ones.

Avoid books and coloring books because they can cause car-sickness. Infants aren't immune to boredom either, so make sure they have new squishy things to hold or a rattle to shake. Switch off every so often to maintain their interest.

Tip #4 - Don't forget the snacks. Children get bored on long trips and tend to get hungry quite often. Have some good, healthy snacks handy to dole out at these times to save you from having to make yet another stop and spending a lot more money for snacks at a gas station.

Tip #5 - Recruit reinforcements if you can. Invite friends or other family members along on your trip. They may be able to keep your kids busy while you get a few moments here and there for yourself, so you can recuperate and refresh your mind.

Tip #6 - Space out your activities. If you're traveling with young children, don't try to jam a day's worth of activities for them in only a few hours. This will only exhaust them and cause them to be irritable and grumpy. Give them time to do what they want as well, even if that means some time at a video arcade.

Tip #7 - Try to keep as much of their normal routine as possible. There's nothing wrong with letting your kids stay up a little later while you're on vacation, but don't let them stay up for hours longer every night. This will only cause more trouble when you get back home.

Traveling with children can be a very exhausting task for your mind and body, but try to keep these tips in mind to help ease the process. Think of the trip through the eyes of your children and don't expect them to act and react the same as you. It will only make your trip miserable.

Cruises Versus Land-Based Vacations

Planning a vacation can be the best part for many families. The day before is what turns the dream into a nightmare. After packing the van, loading the snacks, getting the maps, securing children in car seats and finally getting on the road, you're exhausted before you get there.

You arrive late to the motel because of a traffic jam, the rooms are full and you're back in the car with tired, crying children. Isn't that fun? If you had listened to your spouse and booked the cruise, you'd be lounging on the deck under the stars while the children would be happily entertained at the kids program.

Sure the Grand Canyon is great - as are other land sites. But if vacation means more to you than running from place to place and a different hotel each night, then you need to kick back on a cruise.

You leave the car in the parking lot because you enter a complete town inside a cruise ship. Everything you need from 24-hour food service to entertainment to sports is all there in walking distance from your cabin.

If you get a budget hotel on land, you'll be lucky to get the towels changed and a swipe of cleaning. On a cruise ship, you have an assigned Cabin Steward who is literally on call to meet your needs.

Not only do you have clean towels, but you find the towels arranged in the most creative shapes - a new one every day. Whether you book an inexpensive cabin on the lower decks or an oceanfront suite with balcony, you receive the kind of service that's usually reserved for celebrities.

On land, you have to negotiate with the family or travel group about where to go and what to see. Somebody wins, somebody loses. Not so on a cruise, where Dad can skeet shoot, Mom checks in for massage and facial at the spa, teens go to their video game room, kids can't wait to get to the children's program and even Grandma can find a bridge game.

Just remember to leave your wallet in the cabin. Dozens of daily shipboard activities are free. On land, you wear out your credit card since everything comes at a price. Perhaps the most astounding aspect of cruising for newcomers is the food.

From breakfast on the pool deck to lunch buffet and dinner, you can eat 24/7. Cruises are known for lavish Midnight Buffets if you have room to eat after ordering your choice among four to five courses at dinner.

But in case you danced past the late buffet, call for cabin service to bring pizza and sandwiches to your cabin. Every meal is an event - whether it's a themed dinner or the dressy dinner on Captain's welcome night.

Once again, put away your wallet. Cruising is the ultimate all-you-can-eat experience and every delicious bite is part of the total per person cost. Go ahead, eat your weight in lobster tail and prime steak - it's all inclusive.

If you estimate just the cost of food on a land vacation, you may find that alone is the amount it takes to send the family on a cruise vacation. For the wandering tourist, there's ample time to stroll around foreign ports of call when the ship docks.

Prior to docking, the cruise director offers briefing sessions to tell you about the attractions, special events and side trips that you can do while on land. Cruise travel has it all - food, fun, pampering and the chance to visit exotic ports.

Cruise Ships - A Small City on Water!

Going on a cruise is not leaving civilization - it's parking your car at the rat race to board the ideal city. Major cruise ships are larger than some land-based communities - with 3,000 + passengers and half that number in cruise staff.

You'll find practically everything on the ship that you left on land, except the stress. That stays on the dock as well. Modern cruise ships are marvels of engineering. The anti-roll technology and computerized monitoring means that you hardly notice the movement when underway.

The cruise ship is organized much like a city. The cabins are neighborhoods with some budget accommodations and others elaborate suites with oceanfront balconies. You even get a daily "newspaper" delivered to your room and slid under the door during the predawn hours.

When you awake, the biggest decision you have to make is what to do today from among the overwhelming list of shipboard activities. Food choices are beyond imagination on all cruise lines, particularly the larger ships.

You can eat in the main dining room or go to one of several specialty restaurants. If you love the sushi bar, Mexicali or Italian bistro, you can eat there. Or you can have food served almost anytime on the deck under the stars.

What's so amazing is that you have so many choices for breakfast, lunch, snack, afternoon tea, dinner and late night snacks, which are all part of the total cruise price. Whether you order filet mignon or lobster - or both, there's no grimacing as you sign the check.

For food lovers, cruising is one great meal after another. If you hate the daily commute, you'll be thrilled with cruise travel. You can walk around the ship to anything you want to do. Keep up your fitness routine at the health club, which is usually on the upper decks.

You've never had such a fabulous view while sweating on the cycle. Then check in at the luxurious spa for massage, facial or a soak in the whirlpool. If you're bored (which is tough to imagine), look at the daily activities list.

Visit the card room, Internet Café, video game room or attend a lecture in the library. Sports are big onboard activities. You can find a pick up game for volleyball, try your aim with skeet shooting or participate in some rock wall climbing. When you get tired after any activity, just walk back to the cabin and take a break.

You can also select a theme cruise and you'll find plenty of people who share your interests. Music lovers can find a cruise based on rock and roll, country music, classical or cruising to the oldies.

Wine tasters and gourmet food buffs are frequent cruises enjoying not only special tastings on board but also excursions to places that cater to their interests. Most every type of hobby has a theme cruise so you connect with others who are as dedicated to model railroads, scrapbooking or photography as you are. You can also find faith based cruises for families who share your beliefs. When the group is larger enough, the entire ship is chartered for special interest groups.

Cruise ships also have practical features such as a doctor and infirmary, shopping for anything you forgot to bring from home, translators if needed and plenty of advice about how to enjoy yourself on shore excursions. This is one city that's devoted to making your stay absolutely perfect.

If you have been offered a great bargain on a cruise or resort vacation, but you cannot seem to get all the details unless you pay the company first, you may be dealing with a travel scam. PAY NOW, TRAVEL LATER ... MAYBE
Typically, scam operators won't give you full and complete information in writing until after you've given them a credit card number, certified check or money order. Once you do get further information, there will be restrictions and conditions which may make it more expensive, or even impossible, to take your trip.While getting a refund is sometimes possible, it's better to avoid paying anything in the first place. While there is the remote chance that you might miss a legitimate deal, chances are you will save yourself time and money in the long run.

To help avoid being a victim of a travel scam, the American Society of Travel Agents provides the following suggestions when evaluating travel offers:

» Be extremely skeptical about postcard and phone solicitations which say you've been selected to receive a fabulous vacation;

» You should receive complete details in writing about any trip prior to payment. These details should include the total price; cancellation and change penalties, if any; and specific information about all components of the package;

» If you insist on calling a 900 number in response to a travel solicitation, understand the charges and know the risks;

» Walk away from high pressure sales presentations which don't allow you time to evaluate the offer, or which require that you disclose your income;

» Be suspicious of companies which require that you wait at least 60 days to take your trip.
