How to Stop The Negative

Challenging Your Dark Secrets

In this article I will try to show you how to stop the negative so you can truly gather the positive.

I've been a social worker for 37 years. Most of you think you know what a social worker does. My approach has been different.

This is what you don't know about me as a social worker: I work with all these people known as the dregs of society, the losers. I've worked with them for decades. And you know what? Many of them have found a way to unlock their dark secret for recovery and healing.

You'll hear more about that later. But for now, just begin to think there is a way beyond the pain and into a new life, no matter how far down you've fallen.

Listen for a moment to Jackie S, a prior client of mine, as she explains how we can challenge our dark secret:

"For 17 years I've tried to find an answer to life's pain from early childhood trauma, to adolescent hormones, to young adult mistakes."

"It starts from sorting through your emotions one by one. From guilt, anger, fear, and shame, we begin to understand the dark secret. Hanging on to painful memories is the meaning of the dark secret."

"To apply the simplicity of the dark secret is to learn how to let go of painful issues. By letting go, I now understand the pain from my past was consuming any joy for my future."

"I believe challenging the dark secret is the secret of life."

To challenge your dark secret begin by verbalizing or making a list of how you feel about a stressful problem or issue. Keep addressing your feelings until you are ready to move on and let go.

The letting go process requires you to answer the following questions:

1. What are you holding on to that you know is negative about a problem, issue, or concern?

2. What positive thought can you put in the place of the negative?

3. Most importantly, how can you take better care of yourself?

This process that I am calling emotional recovery hopefully will start you on your journey to overcoming barriers and achieving your hopes, dreams, and goals.

A Writer's Secret Place

Part I

6-24-08

On the first morning of our vacation to Yachats around 6:45 A.M., I am still drowsy while I curl over in bed taking dim note of our surroundings. Our bedroom faces East with a wall to wall picture window protected by a panel of hanging canvas-like shades. The rising sun is streaming through those vertical panels, illuminating a picture of Martha's Vineyards on the opposite wall, and an adjacent beach painting called "By the Sea."

I hear my wife Susan in the kitchen probably making coffee. Every so often there is a cracking boom from the surf outside, crashing against our rugged, rocky Oregon coastline.

I am more awake now, but I close my eyes to move myself deeper into the spirit of relaxation. However, I do commence to stroke Silas, our twelve pound poodle and pomeranian mix, who is snuggled besides me. Slowly, I become aware of and more sensitive to the outside chatter of birds commingled with the cackling songs of some crows.

Woven within the cacophony is the mysterious and melodic flute-like song of an unknown avian creature. Whatever the nature of this species, I am convinced it is a virtuoso. Such sweet, soothing refrains, flash me back to the Native American music, Susan and I became so exquisitely familiar with when we lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico in the 90's.

The flute notes continue with a slightly reedy resonance, accompanied by three staccato whistles at the end of the bird song. I know in my heart, as a few tears of joy land on my face, that I must have arrived in heaven.

As I record these precious moments in my journal, I would like to say a few words of encouragement to aspiring writers. First and foremost, start writing your own journal. There is something healing, therapeutic, and thought provoking about the whole journaling process.

A Writer's Secret Place

Part II

Next, while you journal, pause to slow the pace down. Review the written passages and look for word gems or thought jewels to further refine and appreciate. This form of writing then becomes a kind of cognitive meditation, which facilitates peace of mind and limitless creativity.

For example, I am sitting now in a comfortable lounge chair located in our beach home living room. I have rewritten my entry at least 10 times or more, which is the third thing I want to suggest to all those who want to get published: keep polishing your work.

The more I focused on describing my immediate environment, the more receptive I became to free flowing, relaxing thoughts. I noticed the whole West wall of our living room consists of four, tempered glass windows, about five-by-five square feet each, and a matching pair attached to both side walls. The observation area presents a panoramic view that is unbelievable, humbling, and awe inspiring.

Our rental home actually rests on a grassy cliff overlooking and facing the Pacific Ocean. The spectacular water images hypnotize by the undulating motion of the waves, caressing the huge, oddly shaped, black, barnacle covered, volcanic rock slabs, jutting out in the shoreline.

A Writer's Secret Place

Part III

As I write about the power of journaling, the surf roars with breaking whitecaps, spiraling around and splashing between the rock formation fingers. Sea gulls fly low over the waters, sometimes diving in to feast on sea bounty.

Write about what you hear, feel, and think. Know that there is a creative force within all of us. Practice accessing this inner Light that overcomes all dark secrets, which mysteriously threaten to hold us back from the good we deserve. Let your writing take you to the place of silence deep within our subconscious mind some appropriately call, "The Secret Place of the most High."

Furthermore, listen to the spirit music of your surroundings and observations. Allow your mind, body, and soul to dance to the rhythmic pulse of inspiration and bliss. Give yourself permission to free associate with your creative strengths, talents, and abilities.

So, let's take a deep breath together and revisit one last time the sparkling, gleaming, life images that stand before me today. I look out at a mauve sky on the ocean horizon. At times, the sun turns the sea into millions of glistening diamond lights. A partial cloud-drape extends over the bluish-green waters as far as the eye can see. Gulls and waterfowl are bobbing in clumps, speckling the ocean with white feather squares like enormous nature-made patch quilts. The fishy, salty, seaweed smells permeate the air.

I turn to focus once again on the infinite, majestic waves. Their surf-music play notes of rushing, slashing, percussive melodies, which mesmerize, hypnotize, and soothes the soul. To be writing on a day like this is a blessing beyond imagination, with memories to treasure and keep alive in the secret place within.

INTRODUCTION

Emotional Recovery Formula

We can have a healthier, happier life if we are willing to control our negative side. However, this process poses significant challenges for us. Our social environment presents many obstacles and barriers to staying positive.

For example, America stands before us transfixed by the rhythm of automobile engines, entangled by a war of liberation and retaliation, surrounded by a haze of unnatural vapor and murky waters, mesmerized by the soothing images on color television sets and personal computers.

See the flashing lights; hear the wailing sirens of ambulances racing through our city streets to remove the bodies of children playing drug war games. Look at the women unsafe from attack while jogging in city parks or strolling through neighborhood parks or even office corridors. Youngsters are assaulted by gunman in schools, airport terminals, and McDonald Restaurants. Robbers steal and prey on the unsuspecting in subway stations, private homes or parking lots.

Meanwhile, numerous high school graduates can't read or write, and many college graduates can't find decent jobs; and it's getting harder for them to survive every day. More of the clergy break their vows and end up in court or prison. Half of all eligible voters in our country rarely vote.

Millions of Americans who work, struggle to meet their basic needs for food, shelter, clothing and medical care. Forty-four million Americans don't have healthcare insurance. More than half of our bankruptcy claims are due to overwhelming healthcare costs; yet our political system passes laws to make filing Chapter 7 even more difficult.

In the last year alone, more than a million people have joined the ranks of the poor. The mentally ill and our homeless continue to overwhelm local social service networks. Medicaid and prison costs threaten the solvency of state governments.

Furthermore, mass media floods us with the uneasy images of emaciated third-world children, assassinations, terrorist bombings, casualties of war, looming pandemics, natural disasters, and fear.

The good news is that life doesn't have to be an experience of constant pain and unhappiness. Unfortunately too many people, after initially trying to make some healthy changes, simply give up and return to their old ways of living. And life does appear to be very negative for so many of us.

I got the following message on Twitter pointing to this group:

qlcoach Great blog. Let other authors know about your Blog Spot. Share here: http://www.squidoo.com/grou... about 18 hours ago reply

The blog in question is (I think) the one I posted Tuesday Aug 19, 2008

http://aliendjinnromances.blogspot.com/2008/08/wrting-as-artform-performing-art.html

On this co-blog with 6 other writers, I often post on the methods writers use to achieve certain effects. The blog is focused on SF and Fantasy Romance cross-genre writing, but we all write a wide range of things.

I've written extensively on Worldbuilding, on Astrology specifically for Writers, and a series of 20 long involved and abstract posts on the Tarot, specifically the minor Arcana of the Suits of Swords and Pentacles (the chapters from a 4 volume series on the Minor Arcana that is still looking for a publisher).

I post on Tuesdays.

Hi, Gary. I'm looking into article submitting services, as well as the project you're doing. What do you know about them?

Thanks for including me here Gary. I've submitted a new lens for starters and you will find others scattered throughout Squidoo. I'd like to think that what I post personally on my page can also be posted here. All my work involves helping to promote "The Meadow", a novel recently completed by Elfreda, my writing partner and me. I'm here to learn and, hopefully, pass on my knowledge regarding the new marketing concepts that are available to us over the Internet. I hope everyone enjoys reading my first lens all about the personal interview with William P. Young, author of The Shack.

The tools available on this wonderful sites are still here for me to explore, so apologies for any html text that may arise here and there. I can only get better at this.

Thanks again.

Nice site. Nicer idea, the publishing club.

To self-publishers who frequent this site: I wish you all great success. Growth of the number of publishers is a good thing for you and for those of us who service publishers.

The most important part of your enterprise is to start with well-written books that put text out that matters to people. A sometimes overlooked issue is the one of design. You need covers that attract potential readers and interiors that hold your readers and are easy on their eyes.

Any book interior that steals attention from the writing is counterproductive.

I invite you to have a look at my blog and at the work samples on my website. Links are below.

Thank you.
