Holland - aka The Netherlands

For lenses about the Netherlands: that country that contains Amsterdam...

Dutch people themselves call the country Nederland - and the closest English equivalent is 'The Netherlands' (which is a literal translation of the older way of referring to our collection of states: De Nederlanden).

Holland was the biggest province (or state) in the Netherlands - and the most powerful one. For this reason it came to stand for the whole country - a bit like foreigners will refer to England, meaning the whole of the UK.

Dutch Provinces

The Netherlands has 13 'states'. We call them provinces (provincies). Zeeuws Vlaanderen is one of them, right next to Belgium.

Amsterdam

Some Dutch people think that foreigners rarely realize that Amsterdam is in the Netherlands - I give you all more credit than that. But still, it's clear that it's the most famous part of our country. No surprise then that so many lenses have been made about it.

What the heck - even for many of it's inhabitants it's often hard to imagine there being anything interesting going on outside the city... Both my brothers, both artists, insist that there is no way they'd want to live anywhere else.

Anne Frank

Arguably the most famous person from Amsterdam (though there's lots of competition), teenage Anne Frank kept a diary as she was hidden from the Germans during World War 2. That diary outlived her, and the war, and gives a vivid impression of what it must have been like to live through those times.

Marjolein Bastin

One of the more successful current Dutch artists is Marjolein Bastin. Her art is of course more in the nature of 'folk art', but that's no reason not to list her here.

All accepted, except the one about your books - doesn't seem sufficiently 'Dutch' to me.
