Alfa Romeo: Classic and Modern Alfas

Alfa Romeo have made some of the most beautiful cars over the years and still make some very fine cars today. The company has been around since 1910 and have been involved in motor racing since 1911. They are now part of the Fiat group (including other car companies: Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari) since 1986, but originally the company was called A.L.F.A. (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili or in English: Lombard Automobile Factory, Public Company)

Alfa Romeo has been involved in motorsport since the shorty after the company was formed, as a constructor and an engine supplier, but most famously, in 1929 Alfa Romeo employee, Enzo Ferrari founded the Scuderia Ferrari racing team for Alfa Romeo, later forming his own independent team in 1939.

Here is a selection of Alfa Romeo articles and photographs on Squidoo: Alfa Romeo Spiders, GTVs, 156, 159, 8C, Mito etc...

If you have created an article about Alfas of any sort, please add it here. Classic Alfa Romeos or brand new ones expensive or inexpensive all are welcome. We have articles about classic alfa spiders and classic cars in general so far.

Alfa Romeo Spider

What does Spider (or Spyder) mean?

There have been many Alfa Spiders over the years. "Spider" means Italian convertible and is used by many Italian companies (and other companies such as Porsche occasionally too) It refers to sporty, two-seater, open horse-drawn carriages probably of the eighteenth century. The roads were rough and muddy so the occupants would get splashed during over-exuberant driving. Young wealthy men would have tall wheels put onto their carriages to avoid splashing their fine clothes. The result was that, from a distance and from the front, the small carriage looked like a spider's body and the angled skinny, tall wheels and the horses legs looked like the spider's legs.
