Controversy is brewing over the way NASCAR chose to end the Daytona 500. As cars were wrecking on the final lap, NASCAR chose to allow the leaders Kevin Harvick and Mark Martin to race to the finish line even though NASCAR's rulebook states that the field should be frozen at the instant of caution. Had the caution flag been displayed as soon as the wreck began, the field would have been frozen, and Mark Martin (who was leading at that instant) would have been declared the winner. But NASCAR chose not to display the caution flag and allowed the two leaders to race back to the finish line which allowed Kevin Harvick to pull ahead and win.

I would like to invite of the members in this group to check out SquidSports. It is a sports predictions group. I have made predictions that Dale Jr. will win the race for the cup (I know, he really doesn't have a chance!) and that The Crimson Tide will win the SEC. Lots of fun.

New member here! More a Formula 1 guy than NASCAR. And definitely more into driving on the track than watching. Happy to have joined with my Skip Barber lens and come talk track driving at Track Addict. Net.

Excellent point, jjones232! But to NASCAR's credit, that had to be a tough call. The fans paid to see a race to the finish, but rules state no racing to the caution. I guess they took the lesser of two evils. Besides, I think most racers (Martin included) would rather race to the checkered flag.

NASCAR mistake? Daytona 500-Their rules changed and states that if there is a wreck, NO ONE will be allowed to race back to the yellow or checkered flag. It states your position will be frozen when the caution flag flies. There was a wreck! Why didn't the caution flag fly? That's what Mark is asking
