I'm a travel photographer and my main tips would be to shoot the same scene from different angles because you may be surprised to find later that the most obvious angle wasn't necessarily the best. Also include foreground elements to add depth to your images. Placing a subject or an object into the bottom left or right corners can really help the overall composition. When it comes to post-processing, use the "selective color" option in Photoshop, or whatever similar function in the software you use, to increase the black in black and neutral to really bring your photos alive with depth and contrast, and to stop them looking too flat.

My biggest photography tip is this:

Learn to see light. Learn how it behaves. Bounce it, diffuse it, block it, add it, subtract it, color it, shape it. Get your flash off your camera and let it shape your subjects as opposed to just "lighting them up".

Photography literally means "writing with light".

So get out your paintbrushes and start making some photos!

If you're still using a compact, move up to a DSLR. Much greater control, and the (usually) larger sensor makes for better quality at the same pixel count.

TWO tips:
First of all, get closer!
Second, don't let your digital pics just take up space on your hard drive...put them into a custom photobook! GREAT presents for any occasion!

If shooting scenery make sure you get the horizon level. This is very difficult when taking pictures with an ocean horizon - you need to allow for the curve of the earth.

If you ever need to shoot from a helicopter, set your camera to shoot in burst mode so one shutter press takes several images. Helicopters are difficult to shoot from due to the shake etc. but using this tip will ensure that some of the few shots you take each time will be focused, sharp and outstanding!

If you are traveling and have a chance to photograph famous landmarks, try to get closeup shots of architecture or shots without people. It can be really difficult and require a lot of patience, but I managed to get a shot of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris in the middle of the day with no cars or people. I was then able to sell this to book publishers, particularly history text books etc. because it wasn't a "touristy photo". If you'd like, stop by my lens for more of my thoughts on how to sell photos.

Most underwater images have a green/cyan color cast in the original image. To improve your underwater pictures some simple post processing can be done using Photoshop. Check out my blog to see how I post process most of my underwater images.
