Before you start your direct sales business

there are a few things you should consider

Before you start a business you need to learn about it! Learn about what you are selling! Learn about the target market for your products!

If you are starting a direct sales business, learn what you are expected to do - are you expected to do everything by yourself?

Does your company provide you with sales tools? knowledge about the products? information to help you sell the products?

Are you expected to mainly sell products, or recruit other consultants?

Do you have to purchase a certain amount of products each month to remain a consultant, or to be eligible to receive your commission?

You might even have to learn about yourself!

What are your goals for your business?

Will the company provide you a clear and efficient way to reach those goals?

How much will you have to sell each month to make your desired income, or advance within the company?

How many people will you have to recruit to maintain your desired income or advance within the company?

Learn about your sponsors - will you be comfortable working with them as you build your business? Do you trust them to assist you when you need assistance, and to support you even when you don't do things the same way they did.

If you don't then you should seriously consider finding a sponsor you feel more comfortable with.

Although it may cause confusion on the short term, you will be working with your sponsor for the lifetime of your business, and a little drama now may be worth avoiding a lifetime of drama with the wrong sponsor.

Good luck with your business!

I'd love to hear any other tips that you'd like to share about starting a new business...just leave a comment and tell me about it.

[in reply to Gracue] Hi Gracue, I've had so many bad experiences with direct sales, that I haven't kept up with the new companies, but most of them do rely on you recruiting other people to the company - after all they are guaranteed to buy the products so they can tell others how they work.

Even if a company says that you don't have to do home parties, that really is the best way to show people how your products work - unless you are going to show them one by one.

People are reluctant to buy things they haven't seen or touched, and they are reluctant to buy things from one brand when they are used to buying things from another brand whenever they want too, without having to go through a consultant.

I know I ran into that a lot when I was selling White Lily Candles.

So many people asked why should I buy these when I can just buy Yankee Candles, because they are more convenient.

Good luck, and I'd love to hear what you decide to do.

I am looking to start working in a direct sales opportunity. I have varied interests. The problem is I really don't want to do home parties--at least as the main way to secure customers. I also don't want to depend on up-lines, recruiting, etc. I am not opposed to having affiliates, but I just don't want to bug everyone I know to'"join-up!".
I know these are the de rigor of direct sales, but I thought there had to be others who want to work and work more one-to-one. There has to be a company that pays a good commission so that to make any money, you don't have to depend on others, who then recruit others.
