Elric, The Stormbringer series by Michael Moorcock. Elric was a tragic anti-hero whose fate was to kill his true love, kill off his race, and eventually destroy the world and you cheered for him the whole way. Moorcock's writing style was both detailed and fast paced, and very hard to put down.
