Portraits of India - 1

I'm shy, so taking photos of people is hard for me. At the end of my first day when my host asked me what I liked best about India I had to say it was the people. The food is great, the sights are impressive; but the people are magnificent. I knew then that I would have to force myself to take portraits so I could share that impression.

Fortunately, the people of India made it easier than I thought it would be. They were universally warm and open. I tried to be discreet, but usually that wasn't an option for a 6'5" westerner. For the most part, when they saw the camera they smiled and waved. I was often invited to pose with them and their families for their own camera.

Indian Men and women are an astonishing mix varying in color, dress, customs, features and physique, speaking separate languages, professing different religions and engaged in different vocation. Their diet also differs from 'Rice' to 'Chapaties' and 'Puris' and from non-vegetarian to strictly vegetarian food. This evident diversity makes India one of the most fascinating countries in the world. For almost 2000 years, India's artistic traditions dominated by regional techniques. India inheritor to one of the world's oldest and richest civilizations flourishes with monuments whose architectural and artistic beauty guides tourists from all over the world.

Punjab, the seat of the world famous Golden Temple at Amristar, has a hoary past. Hariyana is the site of the epic battle between the Pandavas and the Gauravas where the immortal 'Gitta' was proclaimed. Andhrapradesh with its world famous Thirupathy Temple, Tamil Nadu famous for its Cave Temples, Orissa with Konark Sun Temples and Asokas inscription and Utter Predesh with its "Taj Mahal". Bihar with its 'Vihars' and 'Stupas' of King Asoka and Goa with beautiful Churches- having Golden ceilings are tourist's paradise.
In the Eastern States of Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura, history has taken a back seat and allowed nature to enthrall with game sanctuaries, lakes, and waterfalls and miles and miles of tea gardens, exotic orchids and absolute greenery of the hills provide a fitting back drop for colorful costumes, handicrafts and costumes of the people.
Yes INDIA is a "WONDER LAND".

The Great Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal - Hindi: %u0924%u093E%u091C %u092E%u0939%u0932; Persian/Urdu: %u062A%u0627%u062C %u0645%u062D%u0644 - symbol of love in India.

The Taj Mahal, is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, that was built under Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Turkish, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was cited as "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world's heritage." People from all over the world come to see this fine piece of architecture.

When I was there many Indian tourist went to see this phantastic building, too and adored the splendid architecture.
