Some Things Come and Go...

Take your cellphone for example

In about 1996, I joined a mlm setup designed to sell phone cards. Sounded like a great idea. I spent several hundred dollars to get this going. Bought all kinds of phone cards for myself as part of the program.

It did not work. The problem? Timing. Another invention was taking the world by storm. Cell phones. Who needs a phone card when you have a cell phone? And, by 1996, people were starting to get cell phones by the droves. Myself included.

Remember beepers? Do you see anyone carrying a beeper any more? Just a few. Why? What do you do when you get beeped? Answer: find a phone.
Beepers were great inventions, but they were replaced.

Cellphones have even replaced the wristwatch. I stopped carrying a watch when I got a cell phone. Are you still wearing a watch?

So, cellphone cards and beepers were great innovations in their time. But, cellphones and home computers have proven to be milestones in our time.

How about VCRs. I was one of the first on my block to get one in 1982. We all really enjoyed them. We still use them some. I have lots of tapes. But, we really use our TiVo or digital video recorder the most. It is so easy to use and we never really understood all those buttons on a vcr anyway. And, that crazy blinking light that said "12:00" all the time. It seemed like everywhere you went, everyone had those blinking clocks going on every appliance in the house. They were a selling point for the appliance salesmen, but most people did't want to study all those owner's manuals.

So, timing is all important in marketing new innovations. Something better can always overshadow your product. What seems like a great invention for mankind can be put completely out of business by something even better!
