Milk and Milking: Cows Aren't the Only Ones

Most people drink milk and the milk that they drink comes from cows. Cows are kept on farms and the cows are milked twice daily. There was a time when each family had their own cow and knew just where their milk was coming from. Now we purchase our milk in cartons without regard to the animal it comes from.

But did you realize that cows aren't the only ones to produce milk? Yes, we may know that all mammals produce milk but I am speaking of mammals that produce the milk that we as humans drink. Many people drink goat's milk. In fact throughout the world, more people drink goat's milk than cow's milk.

But don't stop there. Milk doesn't come just from cows and goats. This unit study is about all the animals that are milked for their dairy products. You may have heard of many of them but some may surprise you.

Where does milk come from?

Cows on a Dairy Farm

The Milk Makers (Reading Rainbow Book)

As with any unit study we begin by brainstorming everything the children know about milk. Where does milk come from? What animals produce milk? Why do we drink milk? Has anyone ever milked a cow?

Some of the statements that my class mentioned were:

Milk comes from cows.
Milk comes from the refrigerator.
Milk is white.
All animals product milk.
Do birds produce milk?
It's hard to get milk to come from the teats of a cow.

You may know that some of these statements are false but it is important for the children to throw out all ideas and then through research and observation discover which statements are true and which ones are false.

The Milk Makers by Gail Gibbons is a wonderful introduction to children about cows, dairying and life on a dairy farm. The illustrations invite children to ask question and learn the answers.

Cows Aren't the Only Ones

Dairy Animals

Here are some of the more common animals that are milked daily. You can learn more about cows and goat dairies and the products produced from their milk.

Life on a Dairy Farm (Life on a Farm)

We create a bulletin board of animals that are milked. Each time we read a book about milk and milking we look for more animals that produce milk for humans, draw a picture of the animal and add it to the bulletin board.

We then go back to our brainstorming list. If we find a statement to be false we cross it off. We have found that cows, goats and sheep are all common dairy animals.

Nice lens! I've had cow milk, goat milk, sheep milk, and water buffalo milk (carabao milk -- from the Philippines). I've also had soy milk (but I'm not sure how they milk those tiny beans... you can't see the udders very well!). I've liked, thumbs-upped, favorited, and lensrolled your masterpiece. Congrats on another great lens!

[in reply to ElizabethJeanAllen] I remember helping my dad teach the calves to drink from a pail. It was fun to put my fingers in their mouths and feel their warm tongues sucking to drink.

Great group! I grew up on a dairy farm. My brothers did most of the milking. My job was feeding the calves.
