George Carlin - A great Entertainer

The world was saddened on June 22, 2008 when actor and comedian George Carlin died of heart failure at the age of 71. Carlin was best known for his honest and blunt comedy acts describing life in brutal honesty. His comedy act, The Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television, led to the arrest of the comedian, and a Supreme Court case concerning the seven dirty words and obscenity laws. Carlin was best known for pointing out the hypocrisy of human beings, and doing so in a way that made people laugh while recognizing the truth behind the comedy. Carlin was slated to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American humor in November of this year, but did not survive long enough to accept this honor. All of the latest entertainment news venues are full of stories and tributes to the comedian, who dared say what many of us think but are not brave enough to verbalize.

George Carlin had a long history of heart problems, as well as other medical issues. He was blunt about his own problems, as well as problems concerning other people and the rest of the world. Carlin received treatment several times for both alcohol and drug addiction in the past, and was very forthright about his struggles with substance abuse. Heart problems, including numerous previous heart attacks, one of which occurred at Dodger Stadium during a baseball game, had not slowed the comedian down any, and he still kept a very vigorous schedule, appearing in Las Vegas, Nevada, just the weekend before he died at the Orleans Casino and Hotel.

George Carlin Biography

Born in New York on May 12, 1937, Carlin was a ninth grade dropout from high school who also experienced problems when he joined the Air Force, where he received three court-martial proceedings and many punishments. After leaving the Air Force, George Carlin went into radio, and became part of the comedy duo with Burns. In 1962 Carlin left Burns and went solo, and a decade later he lost the ultra clean and conservative look in exchange for a tie dyed shirt, jeans, and a beard, and instantly became popular with the college students of the seventies era. In 1975 Carlin was the host of the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live ever, and he was also an actor with a large following and parts in many movies, sometimes as the voice of characters in animated movies, such as Cars, where Carlin played the voice of the Volkswagen bus Fillmore.

George Carlin will be sorely missed by both the entertainment community and his millions of fans. The latest entertainment news includes many quotes from celebrities around the globe praising George Carlin and his unique brand of humor. Because of him stand up comedy, and comedy in general, has been changed for the better. George Carlin took the right to freedom of speech all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, to make a point that the seven dirty words were just words after all, and do not hold some mystical or evil power after all.
