New York City: General Information
Land area: New York City is composed of five boroughs. See the map icon for color identified locations: Manhattan (in blue), Brooklyn (in yellow), Queens (in orange), the Bronx (in red) and Staten Island (in purple). It has a city land area of 468.9 square miles.Demographics: New York City has a population of over 8.2 million, making it the largest city in the United States, in terms of population. It is also known as one of the most culturally-diverse cities in the world; thanks to its heritage of being a hub for immigrants from all around the world. According to the Department of City Planning, the ten largest countries of origin for modern immigration are the Dominican Republic, China, Jamaica, Guyana, Mexico, Ecuador, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia and Russia. Approximately 170 different languages are spoken in NYC.
Economy: The city is one of the most important in the world in terms of world economy. It houses not only the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, but also 44 headquarters of Fortune 500 rated companies. It has the 2nd largest film industry in the world, next to Hollywood, CA. New York City is also primarily known as a haven for the advertising industry, as a whole.
Culture: With more than 2,000 arts & cultural organizations, over 500 art galleries, nearly 40 large theatres, and a seemingly endless number of attractions including parks, zoos, outdoor events and more; the city is truly an epicenter for culture. It is also famous for being the birthplace of hip hop culture.
