Yes we need change. But it has to be focused and thoughtful and it has to have a theoretical basis. Blindly changing things without having a grounded plan could destroy what remains of the greatest country in the history of mankind.
I shudder at the thought that so much emphasis is placed on 'democracy' because it assumes that voting is the key to good laws. I want the rule of law, not the rule of whim.
But the rule of law rests on a view of what Man is and nobody talks about that any more. "We hold these truths..." is language from the founding fathers and I do not hold out hope for any politician today to even have the tiniest clue about what that means.
Lying is what politics is all about today. That needs to change.
Yes, we need change.

Things are not as simple as they seem. It is easy to make emotion based decisions when it comes to politics, but often emotions can cloud rational judgement. Use common sense to analyze the issues of this election, not emotional hatred for a man not even in the race. Check out my lense to see my approach. Thanks.

Politics is the science that should be focused on defining what Man is and what constitutes valid limitations on Human Action. But it's not a science anymore. It has become the study of how to lie, cheat and steal. In time we will have bloodshed because we've lost sight of "We hold these truths..".
Valid political theory transcends all governments and nothing can be fixed until we revisit the theory being discussed by the founding fathers.

I agree that its not America or Europe or China's place to get involved with the politics there. It doesn't matter what we do or even if we try to help both sides, it will be used against us! Do we believe that things could get worse if we left? Maybe, but they're bad enough now to take that risk

JustOneGuy

If America is under threat, it is the duty of our government to remove that threat.
If, however, we are tricked into removing a non-existent threat by fraud (lies) and sons and daughters die because of that, it should be considered a crime and those responsible for lying to us should be punished.
The punishment should be the most severe punishment possible. We need to make our government officials accountable for their actions.
If one of my children were sent to die on the basis of fraudulent information, I'd want to see those responsible come to the same end. As it is now, no accountability makes those criminals think they can get away with absolutely anything.

We need an INTERNATIONAL Cooperative effort to catch Osama Bin Laden. Once he's gone, and others like him, I believe we will be able to get the terrorism to reduce or maybe even stop.

I believe we need to re-emphasize nuclear non-proliferation and related international treaties, such as the NPT; reduce nuclear stockpiles [including our own]; step up cooperation against global warming; stop our use of torture and overseas renditions; renew our commitment to the principles of a "just war" [as opposed to preemptive war whether or not there's an immediate threat], and renew our commitment to weapons-free space -- for starters.

I think I agree with JanaMurray. Do we know why we have a shortage? I've heard that it is a shortage of refineries. Are there restrictions on building refineries in the U.S. and if so, who are the beneficiaries of those restrictions?

We NEED to PROMOTE alternative forms of energy THROUGH Government INITIATIVES

The melting polar ice caps, melting glaciers worldwide, and other signs of global warming are a serious threat to our way of life. An overwhelming majority of scientists have reached a consensus on this: The earth is warming and the primary cause is man. And, does it need to be said that: global warming is global...as in its effects aren't limited to the United States and global warming doesn't care what political party you belong to. Therefore, we need to begin cooperating with the rest of the world to address this, take steps to slow if not stop it, and invest in research and development of alternative energy.

Posted February 10, 2008

dcgrrl

I agree with Rose0366 - there are many other energy options. Even if you choose to dismiss global warming, you should consider the concept of diversifying our energy options (like a stock portfolio). PLUS air pollution is just nasty. It's not healthy or pretty.

Issues: What Role Should Religion Play in Politics?

Have Your Say!

What should we be thinking about here? Talking about here? Want to share your opinion?

JustOneGuy

Aha! A chance to self promote. Please see my lens on Truth and Morality. It is directly significant to this discussion.
And, incidentally, I am not what one would consider to be a religious person. But...

The fight over yes or no to religion in schools is a red herring to keep us from discussing real issues.

Posted June 11, 2008

SuperPhil

What role... religion and gov? None, Nada, zippo, zilch. That doesn't mean that you cannot pray in school, it means that we should govern without regard to religion. It means no more tax free status either.

Good question, short and sweet. Have a great Sunday and drop by The Realist sometime.

Posted April 13, 2008

Rose0366

Your issue about prayer in school is EXACTLY why I have my daughter in a private Christian School, and would never put her in a public school until she is mature enough to stand up for her beliefs to those who do not believe. I liken my view to the mother of Moses. Exodus 2:2

Posted August 31, 2007

kerryg

I disapprove of school prayer and the pledge because, kids being kids, I knew people who were teased brutally in school for being unwilling to say the pledge due to religious beliefs against swearing and to pray due to athiest/non-Christian beliefs. Elsewhere, same thing happens to kids who DO pray.

Posted June 21, 2007

kerryg

I think people who are offended by things like the ten commandments on public buildings are being hypersensitive and unreasonable, but I agree with them that they don't actually belong there. Religion is a private matter, not a state one. Privately owned stores should be able to do what they want.

About the War

Issues: Iraq?

Have Your Say!

What should we be thinking about here? Talking about here? Want to share your opinion?

JustOneGuy

When I think of Iraq I have an almost overwhelming sense of sadness. I am sad for the people who have died on both sides of the conflict and I am sad for the situation that we will leave behind when we are out of there.
God I hope I'm wrong.
But mostly I am saddened by the realization that our government went in there on possibly false pretenses (and that should be considered a criminal act and won't be) and that political theory is not something even remotely understood by our so-called leaders. We will not have left behind the rule of law, we will have left behind rule by vote. We will give them gang warfare, which they already had. It will crumble into chaos within 5 years. 'We' think that our selected gang will be friendly to us. Sadness is all I have. The biggest debacle in history. Those who continue to sacrifice are HEROES who should demand an accounting. I hope I'm wrong.

The idea of attacking a nation that hasn't attacked you and doesn't pose an immediate threat, because they may or may not pose a possible threat sometime in the future -- it's grotesque. How many Iraqis and US troops have been killed and maimed in the Bush administration's war of choice? There's no "winning" a civil war, we helped create. The longer we stay the more people will die. We need to withdraw our troops.

I'm from Canada. Abortion is legal. I know 2 women personally who, when pregnant, found out they had cancer...they decided to have their babies. Both had other children. Both women passed away, as did one of the babies. I really feel its up to the individual. Wrote a poem about it called "For Emily"
