Philosophy: Approaching Knowledge and Wisdom

"What is philosophy?"

That has to be the most dreaded question of the philosophy student. It must be a rite of passage. I was asked that question every semester of my undergraduate years, and I still don't know the answer.

What IS philosophy? Easy, right? Look at the word: philo: love of, sophia: wisdom.

Well, what is love? Is love merely a desire to possess? Admiration? Respect? What consistutes wisdom? Perhaps the truly wise are those who leave wisdom alone. The more I philosophize the more confused, cynical, and desperate I become. The applicable phrase here might be "ignorance is bliss." I must admit to be a little jealous of the ignorant.

Philosophy is a pursuit, a pursuit of wisdom, but it's a losing game. I never feel any wiser. In fact, I continually discover all the more I do not know. It is a struggle to find answers, but they are answers which only breed more questions. But that's the point, right? How disappointing to actually know it all! The thrill is in the chase, as they say. Philosophers love wisdom, but what they love even more is trying to get it.

So, what is philosophy? I sure don't know. But maybe the lenses featured here can help.

Any philosophical topic is welcome, as well as lenses featuring particular philosophers. My goal is to foster a dialog. I'd love to see a philosophical community emerge here within this group.

Are You A Spider Or An Ant?

The Rationalist v. Empiricist Debate Rages On

In case you've never heard the metaphor, a spider is a rationalist. They believe that all knowledge is gained through logic and reason. Experience, I suppose, is just the icing on the cake. Ants, or empirists, believe that knowledge comes from experience. I experience the sun rising everyday, that is how I know it will rise tomorrow.

I would have to agree that not everything is rational, Rinchen. But does one have to be rational to be a rationalist? Even if I construct all I know from within my own mind, doesn't mean I'm right!

Flickr Philosophy

Link Your Philosophical Thoughts To The Visual Realm

I love Flickr. Seriously. For everything I write online, the highlight is finding that perfect Flickr photo to compliment the subject. Abstract or straight-forward, I love adding the visual element.

Therefore, I would like to put together a lens, or group of lenses (depending on the response), of philosophical writings inspired or complimented by a Flickr photo.

If you would like to participate, please contact me and I will add your contribution to the page. If you do a distinct lens, I will add the link from the Flickr Philosophy "hub."

I will have the Flickr Philosophy lens up shortly!

Don't forget to give credit and, preferably, link to the photographer's page.

Ancient and Hellenistic Philosophers

These guys laid the groundwork, but they are every bit as relevant now as they ever were. Take some time to check out these great lenses. My personal favorites are The Epicureans and The Stoics.
