TV a major cause for insomnia?

Is insomnia caused by watching television?

40% of the population of the US suffers from Insomnia - serious insomnia. 20% more suffer from sleeping problems occasionally. Similar statistics are known from The Netherlands and other countries.

My question is: what does television have to do with this? Is the habit to watch television at night a main cause - perhaps THE main cause - of so many people having suffering from insomnia?

In some instances I may agree with you about tv but I haven't had cable or satellite in my home for about 8 years. Anything I want to watch, I watch it on the net except for movies. But when I'm having trouble sleeping, the tv isn't even on. It just all depends on what was going on that day a lot of the time or how much I've slept the day before. Personally I think too many people have tried to blame the tv for too many things. After all, there is an on/off switch to it.

I believe the TV is a leading cause of late nights. Not only due to it's drawing effect but also the colors, lights, and sounds imprinting themselves into your subconscious - just prior to turning out the lights. I am a firm believer in removing the TV from the bedroom. -McGVs

I agree: I have been off tv for a month or so now, and notice that when I spend an afternoon bored and restless, but not watching tv, I usually wake up refreshed and happy.

Go figure!

Quality information about sleep, insomnia and sleep disorders

I want this group to be about quality lenses. There are a lot of lenses about sleep, insomnia etc. out there - and I plan on accepting only the best of the best.

As long as this group stays small, all lenses that get accepted will be featured on this page.

To jump start this group I've made it 'accept all submissions' for now. This doesn't mean all submitted lenses will stay in.

I will look at each, and if I haven't already voted on it - I will vote on it as well (I do use all vote-options, so if you think your lens is a 2-star lens, just don't submit it).

Lenses that aren't quality will be booted. I get to decide what quality IS.

Disease and Insomnia

Sleep disorders are often linked to poor health

It can go both ways: ill health can lead to sleep problems, but insomnia can also lead to health problems.

Insomnia causes

There are all kinds of medical and psychological causes for insomnia. Professionals in this field are convinced though that most people with insomnia schedule too much time for their sleep - paradoxically.

There are a lot of other factors though. Some of these are discussed in the lenses above.

One particularly tricky one is the relationship between insomnia and depression. Lack of sleep can cause depression: we all get cranky from lack of sleep. Multiply that over several weeks or months, and you can get into serious mental health trouble.

The opposite is also true: depression is one of the causes for insomnia. This means that sometimes anti-depressants are prescribed even when the cause is the insomnia, not the depression. Weirdly enough it often works: the two systems are very much related.
