Squidoo Groups are da bomb!

What makes Squidoo different than other help-you-build-it websites?

One feature is groups.

Groups are, well, groups of lenses that have something in common. Want to get all the computer lenses together? Or the football lenses? Or the lenses about vacationing in the Ozark? Create a group.

Here you can learn more information about using, creating, and maintaining groups. You can also get personal help from from ME, Barkely, a Citizen Squid and your Groups Mentor.

To find your answer, look through the links below. If you still can't find the answer, leave a message at the guestbook below. (Be sure to log in so I can answer your question directly!)

Looking For More Information On The Recent Groups Changes?

It's still a work in progress, I'll be updating it over the next day or so with information on taking your groups from good to great.

If you have a group you think meets the cut, feel free to add it to the Plexo...

What is a Group?

A group on Squidoo is a collection of lenses that are related, and belong to a system managed by a groupmaster.

The groupmaster creates a group, and sets standards on which lenses can join. There are groups just for recipes, and groups just about cars, and groups just about wedding services.

Adding lenses to groups can help your lenses get found! When readers are out looking for similar resources, they may find your lens by clicking on related lenses in a group.

How do I join a group?

In order to add a lens to a group, your lens must first be featured and published. (See our lens on WIP for more info.)

To add a lens to a group:
  1. Log into your account on Squidoo.
  2. Visit the group homepage of the group you would like to join. Make sure you pick groups that are appropriate and fit your topic. Some groupmasters have instructions on what is and isn't allowed. Be sure to read these first!
  3. In the right column there is a link that reads "add an existing lens." Click it. (Note: this won't show up if you're not logged in!)
  4. Select the lens you wish to add from the drop down menu and click next.
  5. Some groups are set up to automatically accept lenses, and some are set so that the groupmaster has to first approve you. Make sure you only submit lenses that are appropriate. Submitting lenses that don't fit the topic or instructions of the groupmaster can get you banned from the group!

How do I transfer a group?

Transferring a group is simple if you know how. Here are some easy directions for doing it.
  1. First, find out who you're going to transfer the group to and get the email address associated with their Squidoo account. You'll need this in order to properly transfer the group.
  2. Second, go to the Manage Members page of the group you want to transfer. To get here, click on the My Groups tab, then click "manage" for the appropriate group.
  3. At the very bottom of the page, add this email address to the list of administrators.
  4. After you have done that, go to your regular dashboard and click "transfer a lens" in the left column.
  5. Select the group you want to transfer from the drop-down menu. It will be in the format groups..GROUPNAME.
  6. Enter the email address and a note if you wish, and click send.
  7. After the new groupmaster has accepted the group, they can keep you as an admin or remove you so you won't get group notifications.

I have not yet reached the stge and have the experience of creating group. Of course squidoo is not allowing that also at present. So, no problem for me for the time being.

in reply to Barkely If that's the case, the question I came here to ask becomes even more important: if groups are to be closed by squidoo HQ - is there going to be some sort of procedure so lensmasters can take over a group BEFORE that happens? I mean, so the group doesn't have to be lost - can instead be transferred to people who are more likely to take good care of it?

I created a lens and it has the green check mark, but when I try to add it to a group, it doesn't show up in the list.

It appears to then take me to the login screen.

I did notice that my lens hasn't been ranked yet...could that be the problem? I created it 2 days ago. How long does it take to get ranked?

My email is julie.gibbins1@btinternet.com

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I keep getting this message when trying to join a few groups:
Please check the invitation URL you were provided; it does not match any of the known co-branding groups.

What does that mean?

Need More Help?

Check out the Squidoo Answers Deck or SquidU for more information on groups, and information on everything Squidoo.
The Squidoo Answer Deck
The Squidoo Answer deck is run by Squidoo community leaders, and provides answers to many FAQ and some not so frequently asked questions. If you have a question related to Squidoo, chances are one of Squidoo's resident experts has answered that question (and made a lens on it).
Squid U Forum
The SquidU Forum is another excellent place to find answers to your questions. If you search and can't find an answer, don't be afraid to ask. When I first started with Squidoo I spent hours in there learning the basics from the experts.
