Fresh Herbs Ready When You Are!

Nothing beats the taste and aroma of fresh herbs added to your favorite recipes. And certainly not those dried-up, crumbled, flaky herbs you find in jars at your local grocery store!

The shelf life on those jars of dried herbs is a year or more so you can imagine how fresh they're going to taste when you sprinkle them on a salad. Ugh!

But fresh herbs... now that's another story!

Fresh herbs that you pick from your own garden and sprinkle directly into stews and soups and salads are filled with flavor because it hasn't been baked out of the leaves in the drying process.

Fresh herbs also retain more of their nutrients, especially the essential oils that can be so beneficial to your health.

Why don't more people grown their own fresh herbs? Who has time to garden!? All that digging and planting and weeding and thinning! It's just easier to pick up a jar of dried herbs at the market.

The Benefits Of Using Fresh Herbs

Pump Up The Flavor

You really don't realize just how much flavor herbs add to your recipes until you start cooking with fresh herbs. They pump up the flavor in every dish. Follow your recipe and use exactly the herbs it calls for or spice up your life and just start experimenting.

Reduce the Need for Salt

If you need to lower your salt intake the best thing to do is start using fresh herbs in your recipes. Their intense flavor means you can back off on the salt shaker because you'll be getting a flavor boost from the herbs.

Essential Oils

With fresh herbs you also get the benefit of their essential oils. For example, peppermint oil has been shown to help relieve nausea and increase alertness. Make a cup of fresh peppermint tea and you'll perk right up.

Reduce Cancer Risk

There are nine herbs that are particularly high in anti-oxidants which are beneficial in so many ways. They help slow the effects of aging, and they help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, diabetes and cancer. Those nine herbs include: Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Dill, Mint and Chives.

I have an aero garden but haven't used it in quite awhile. Need to get back to growing greens, that way I know they aren't full of pesticides.

A little. My hubby introduced me to using fresh herbs when we got married. We want to try growing some in the house next winter! The Aerogarden looks like fun.

I have one of the Aerogarden models with 6 openings. The first round was really fun and I had more herbs than I knew what to do with. I started a second batch but it didn't do well because I had to go on vacation not long after I started it. Then my dad moved in and I had to use the space for him - had the machine sitting in the guest bathroom. I may try it again towards the end of summer. Having fresh herbs was great, but if you don't cook much like me, a lot will go to waste. The Genovese Basil is fantastic!
