How To Be More Self Sufficient

During World War II, the UK was urged to 'Dig for Victory' and grow their own basic foods in their gardens. This not only provided food for families, but also helped the war effort by freeing up valuable space for war materials on the merchant shipping convoys, which would normally have been taken up by food. By 1943, over a million tons of vegetables were being grown in gardens and allotments.

There is no world war now of course, but there are still lots of advantages for growing your own food; the food is organic and you know exactly where it's come from, it's cheaper, it's healthier, you are less reliant on world trade, it reduces green house gases, if you have children they will appreciate how vegetables are grown, and also, it's fun!

Food You Can Grow

If you're looking to save money, the things that you can grow to save you the most money are: fruit trees (don't bother growing from seed though), lettuce (which grows quickly), herbs (very fast payback), vine vegetables such as cucumbers and zucchini (most prolific crop producers), and bell peppers.

The least cost effective things to grow are potatoes, carrots, celery, asparagus and wheat. However, if your primary goal is not money-saving, then these vegetables are satisying to grow - and you'll never get fresher!

Other fruit and vegetables you can grow in your garden include onions (red, white and spring), garlic, tomatoes, chillies, peas, parsnips, swede, sweetcorn, beetroot, French beans (dwarf and climbing), runner beans, leeks, cabbage, courgettes, radishes, broccoli, kale, cauliflower, strawberries, raspberries, gooseberries, rhubarb, apples, lemons, plums and currants (red, black and white), blackberries, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches and pears - obviously dependant on the climate in your country.

Growing Your Own

There are many advantages to growing your own fruit and veg, including: the money you can save, saving the environment by reducing food miles, healthier food free of chemicals, you can grow varieties that can't be found in the stores, it will encourage kids to eat their veg, there is less waste because you can compost the dead plant matter at the end of the year and use it in the soil the following year, personal satisfaction of getting back to nature and reaping rewards for our efforts, the freshness of the food, and the fact that you can go to your garden rather than the store to get your veg.

This is a really great topic. As food is getting more and more expensive, having a garden is becoming popular again. Nothing beats the taste, and it does save a lot of money. Well done.
