From the lens How to Grow Crystals.

  • Xanderkadz Apr 30, 2012 @ 8:49 pm | delete
I grew alum crystals in chemistry! Everyone else went for size, but I went for perfection. They wound up with giant fuzzy masses of crystal and I had a perfect little crystal that was pure and rigid in shape. Slow and steady wins the race in crystal growing!

Crystals -- whether found in the minerals in earth's rocks or grown from common chemicals -- are a striking example of the beauty and order manifest in the natural world. I am in my mid-fifties, but crystal growing is an activity I have loved since I was a teenager. As a father and an educator, I have ample opportunity to convey my own love of science, including the study of chemistry and crystals. So, I am glad to view this site on such a fascinating subject.

Thank you so much for this lens. Crystal growing has been quite a bit on the television here in the UK, but I always keep forgetting the process the moment the show is over. Now we can do it at home as a schooling project. I will have a problem though when it comes to explaining atoms, ions and so on because I disastrously failed in chemistry at school. How about a lens on atoms? Thank you again!

Fantastic project !! Question: Is it possible to grow the crystals with some other medium (other than water) ?? It would be a shame if they got wet and just dissolved or if their water evaporates and they break down. If not, does an acrylic coat help preserve them ??

My daughter has tried growing crystals several times, but she always ends up with crystals in the bottom of the jar. Now she'll giving filtering a try. Great lens!

These crystals are beutiful. I'm sure my nieces would love these.
  • Tylanash Feb 12, 2010 @ 7:15 am | delete
My salt is not saturating. How long is this supposed to take? The book I have says that I should measure salt: water at 1:1 and keep in in warm water on the stove. I have been stirring the mixture and it is thirty minutes. The crystals are still sitting in the bottom of the jar. Does it take longer than this? Or do I seem to be doing it wrong?
  • Guest160483 Feb 23, 2010 @ 4:11 pm | delete
1:1 is a very high ratio. Try doing 2:1 or 3:1, (water:salt) and bringing the water to a boil before adding the salt. Hot water holds more salt, and as it cools, it will form crystals. I'm no expert, but it might help.

my blurb is that crystals are wonderful types of minerals that can made in many dfferent ways such as the salt crystal, sugar crystal, and my favorite the crystal lamp. That is how all of you kids out there should take wonderful liking to science and other things like mathmetis.

Some crystals, like copper sulfate, are naturally colored. Some crystals, like sugar, you can color simply by adding food coloring to the growing solution.

hey i made crystals that grow up on a toilet paper roll! they are awsome! all you need to do is mix equal parts of tablesalt, hot water, and vinegar in a plate. then stand the toilet paper roll upright in the solution on the plate.leave it undisturbed. depending on humidity you should see crystals in 1-3 days. wait till they get big and fluffy not just little crystals. have fun! :)

  • steveohm Mar 29, 2009 @ 12:44 pm | delete
I'm hoping to grow large sheets of crystal (12"w x 12"h x .5" to 1"t), doesn't matter if it's technically not a single crystal, but hoping it can be carved. (like salt, sugar, gypsum, alum, etc. Is this even possible? most experiements seem to involve hanging from a string. Are there solutions to make large singular cubic crystals?
  • Azareal Mar 28, 2009 @ 3:41 pm | delete
You'll get nice crystals overnight. You can grow large crystals over a few days if you want them to be bigger.

I don't know of anyone who has cracked a crystal by holding it, but I can think of reasons why it could happen. Crystals often contain internal fractures or instabilities. Any stress/energy can crack a stressed crystal, such as the heat from your hand, maybe vibration from shaking hands, pressure if she held the crystal too tightly, or who knows... maybe her electomagnetic signature. I know someone who loses wi-fi from her laptop and blows incandescent lights when stressed, so I imagine stress produces detectable energy.
  • TinkerM Jan 25, 2009 @ 5:24 pm | delete
My friend put a crystal in her hand and it cracked in half. The lady was like really stunned and said she must have some real energy going on. She was in a lot of stress with a AD son. Have you ever heard of this before? Great lens thanks...
  • Azareal Jan 24, 2009 @ 1:26 pm | in reply to Dizzboy66 | delete
There are a few reasons for growing crystals. Some people grow them simply because they are beautiful. There are more practical reasons to grow crystals, too. A crystal can be analyzed to learn about the way atoms and molecules stack. Crystals are grown to make materials with special properties. A good example is growing a silicon crystal for use as a chip.
