Oregano, an Herb for the Perennial Garden

Oregano leaves are fragrant and add wonderful flavoring to many sauces and recipes. Oregano has valuable medicinal properties, and the flowers attract bumble bees and honey bees.

I am sure most of you know what oregano is, but my hope is that you'll discover at least one new thing about oregano and its uses during your visit here. I can smell the oregano now, can you?

Grow Oregano in an Indoor or Outdoor Kitchen Garden

Smells so wonderful to walk past our Oregano in the garden

As I was searching for a way to grow Oregano and other herbs close to my house, perhaps on my deck, I found the following kit and liked it a lot because it wouldn't take up a lot of space. With a sunny window or doorway, the herbs can grow inside.

The following comes with all you need to grow Chives, Basil and Oregano. Of these three, one, Basil, is an annual, it comes up for one season. When you snip off the tops of the basil plants to cause the plants to spread, you can put the cuttings in water, and they will root to grow new plants. You can replant these outside or inside to replace the plants you have growing with the smaller plants. You can also leave them in water to to grow for a while...if you do this be sure there are no leaves under the water line or they will decay.

Oregano and Chives are perennials, they come up each year if grown outdoors in the garden. You can grow them in your indoor container for a time as well.

Oregano is in the mint family, so will spread like mint. We "control" that by planting it in our more difficult soil, as it is a hearty, drought resistant plant. Little to no cultivating and care is needed if you have a busy life and not enough time to spend in the garden. You will want to snip off the flowers for a while as it is better for the plants that you will be using for seasoning, but I always leave a section of the patch to flower for the bees, they love the oregano flowers.

Italian Tomato Sauce Recipe

Is Oregano an Italian Herb?

When I was a young girl, I thought of Oregano as an herb that must only grow in Italy because it was only used in Italian dishes. It was in Spaghetti Sauce, and added great flavor to our Lasagna and other Italian dishes.

Here is a very hearty recipe that I found at allrecipes.com for a rich Italian Meat Sauce that can be used on Spaghetti, in Lasagna, or any other Italian dish you may enjoy. My only suggestion would be to leave the meat out if you prefer a meatless sauce.

Ingredients:

* 4 tablespoons olive oil
* 1 onion, chopped
* 6 cloves garlic, sliced
* 3 (15 ounce) cans seasoned tomato sauce
* 3 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with juice
* 6 cups water
* 8 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
* 2 pounds sweet Italian sausage (leave the Sausage out for meatless sauce)
* 2 pounds ground sirloin (leave ground beef out for meatless sauce)
* 4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, divided
* 1 cup grated Romano cheese
* 2 tablespoons dried oregano
* salt and pepper to taste
* 1 pound pork meat, cubed
* 1 cup dry bread crumbs
* 3 tablespoons garlic powder
* 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese
* 2 eggs

Directions: Click here for directions for preparing the sauce at allrecipes.com.

Make Oregano and Tomatoes a part of your Kitchen Garden

Something pretty for the kitchen inside and out

Oregano is a "kitchen herb" and can be a wonderful addition to a kitchen garden. A kitchen garden is usually in a place that is easy to get to from the kitchen, so you can run out and pick what you need as you are preparing your meal. In my case, it would be a container garden on my deck. There were quite a few pretty prints when I clicked through and searched "oregano prints", but I liked this one in particular.

Oregano essential oil is high in antioxidants, and has anti-microbial properties. It is in a very concentrated form and should be used with care and as directed. It is used for a variety of things, both topically and taken internally. As with all essential oils, you will need to educate yourself as to how to use this properly, our focus here is more culinary, but you will find a lot of information about how to use Oregano Oil and what conditions it is used for, plus precautions, if you search here on Squidoo or on the web.

    I'm just starting to grow some spices of my own, but nothing too fancy. Some basil and cilantro, which are both incredibly easy. I should've grabbed some oregano too!
  • happynutritionist Apr 21, 2010 @ 9:54 am | delete
    The wonderful thing about herbs like these is they don't take too much care, and offer so much! I'm not a fancy gardener at all, just love watching things come up and adding to my perennials each year.
  • Wednesday_Elf Apr 20, 2010 @ 7:26 am | delete
    Nicely done, and very educational. My son likes to grow his own fresh herbs, so I am familiar with how oregano plant grows and about 'pinching back' to continue the leaves growing without going to 'flower' until you're ready. And what would Italian dishes be without Oregano seasoning! Great photos!
  • GonnaFly Apr 20, 2010 @ 3:49 am | delete
