Growing Carrots
Ranked #9,286 in Home & Garden, #115,335 overall
Growing carrots is great for your health. Carrots are loved by lots of people and they can be an extremely healthy part of your diet. Growing carrots can be moderately difficult, but it is worth it. You can grow many different colors of carrots. They come in orange (of course), purple, yellow red and white. It may be fun to have a variety of colors of carrots growing in your garden. Carrots like loose soil (many gardeners like to add sand to the soil) that is free of clumps, debris and rocks. Carrots do not like being grown in fresh manure! This can make them become forked. Carrots are most of the time sown directly into the soil about 2-3 weeks before the last frost (they like cooler weather). Make sure you read on the seed packet when the carrots are going to be ready to harvest, because if you harvest growing carrots too soon, they may not taste as good. This page has lots of resources for growing carrots.

Growing Carrots Tips
- Use a loose soil. Carrots do not grow well in packed soil because it is a root.
- Make sure soil is free of debris, rocks and clumps. Carrots hate these and will have to go around them making your carrots misshaped.
- Plant carrots about a 1/4 of an inch under the soil. Do not plant them deep.
- Do not use fresh manure on your carrot garden. They hate this!
- Make sure you leave them in the ground long enough or they may not taste as good.
- Grow carrots with stronger smelling plants like onions and leeks to fool carrot flies to help keep these pests away.

- I grew carrots this year and the slugs ate the tops! I'd never had that happen before and, by the time I figured out what was going on, a lot of tops were gone. But I harvested the carrots early and canned them.

- Thanks for this lens. Growing carrots is one thing that I have always had difficulty with. So I have watched your videos. I think that I haven't been planting them deep enough. I was also surprised that you said plant them before then end of frost. I will try that next year.
